The Elite Diner

Some of you will remember the Elite Diner in downtown East Liverpool. I wasn't living in the area when the diner was razed, so I can't say how long it's been gone. Maybe some readers can fill us in. The Elite (locals pronounced it "ee-light" with stress on first syllable) was a classic greasy spoon at the corner of Sixth and Jefferson streets. Click to enlarge (submitted by Connie Carmichael)

I can't remember exactly how long it's been gone, either, but I have some fond memories relating to it.
When I was little, my aunt, at the time, was working in the old Woodbine Laundry. On her day off, she used to take us on the bus to East Liverpool for a day of shopping. We always went to the Elite Diner for lunch. They had the best vegetable soup! (They made it with corned beef.) I liked getting the home-fried potatoes with gravy, too.
My aunt is no longr with us, and I will always treasure those memories, of which the Elite Diner was a part.

WOW, now that picture brings back some wonderful memories. I remember doing well in school throughout the week and my mother would reward me with going to the Elite Diner. I loved there gravy fries and they made there Hamburg’s out of real meat (almost all placed do not do this today). From what I understand the Elite Diner was not torn down Matt, but was moved to another location “UNKNOWN by me” and restored. Anyone with any information would be great. I would love to find out where and visit this place.

I cannot believe my eye’s, I just noticed who the female in the picture is. She lived in the apartment complex located in the background behind the Diner. She was always cleaning the sidewalks and was always and I mean always outside the Diner with a broom. This is really creepy and seeing this photo makes my hair on my arms raise up. I always went to this Diner and she was always there. Thank you for supplying this photo.

According to the link above, the diner was moved in 1996 to a location in East Liverpool where it is being stored and the owner who has a diner museum has no plans for it at the present time.
I have pleasant memories of this diner. The food was wonderful and probably responsible for more clogged arteries than any other place in the area! ;-)
Matt is right, it was always called the ee-lite diner, the proper word, elite, just didn't fit!
Thanks for the lovely picture.

My dad would allways eat here or perkins on st.clair after the bars closed or around that time.
The food was good, but for fries and gravy Jonnys lunch was the best.
My only trip to the Elite was cut short when a fight broke out between
two guys very dumb because the police station was 1/2 a block away
and my order was given to me to go

It was still good!!

I believe the Elite's cook, (Cookie Virden maybe), now has Cookie's Kitchen near the fire station downtown?
The diner was moved out of town and I thought it was being stored near Columbiana somewhere waiting to be restored...

My grandma, Goldie Bethel and her sister, Lily Early worked there. They made the pies.
And I'm certain that it's Grandma in the photo. She lived at the apartment building.
