Steelers must plan for next year

by M. Stewart
Regular readers will note that I stopped writing about football several weeks ago. I did so not because the Pittsburgh Steelers were having a lousy season, but because the topic didn’t seem to interest readers much. Well, interest or no, I’m bringing back football to ORL as of today.

After Sunday’s 27-0 defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens, the Steelers have hit bottom. I agree with Bob Smizik of the Post-Gazette. This is no longer about a championship team with bad luck and a few head problems; the Steelers truly are a bad football team. The following observations are shared by many:

Since the first few games of the season, head coach Bill Cowher has clearly been emotionally disengaged on the sidelines. No spitting, no screaming, no jaw. The guy just stands there like he’s not even watching the game. I’m certain this will be Cowher’s last year with the Steelers. Much has been made of his North Carolina “dream home” and his refusal to discuss his future, but when management looks back on this disastrous season, it will be the poor coaching that counts. For whatever reason, Bill isn’t into it anymore. He’s done a good job in Pittsburgh for a long time, but when you lose interest, it’s time to move on.

The Pittsburgh running game is a joke. Of course, Willie Parker is going to break some runs and look good now and again, but he’s not the kind of back who can carry the team. Jerome Bettis and Willie Parker, yes, but not Parker alone. I don’t even know who the other running backs are this year. It really doesn’t matter.

The defensive backfield is among the worst in pro football. As such, most teams have thrown the ball at will on Pittsburgh all year, and they will continue to do so until better players arrive. Cornerbacks Deshea Townsend, Ike Taylor, Bryant McFadden, Anthony Madison—this crew makes mediocre quarterbacks look great. The only reason they made it through last season was that other teams had yet to figure out Pittsburgh’s linebacking scheme. Pressure on the quarterback took pressure off the cornerbacks. This year, teams have watched enough film to pick up the Steelers blitz and give QB’s time to exploit the weak secondary.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has had a bad year. He leads the league in interceptions and has been a model of inconsistency. TV announcers continue to gab endlessly about the motorcycle crash and appendicitis, but I think Ben’s problem goes deeper. First of all, his receivers are weak. Hines Ward seems to have lost a step or two since last season, and Cedric Wilson just isn’t very good. Santonio Holmes may end up being a decent receiver, but there is no sign of future stardom. Tight end Heath Miller has the best hands of the bunch, but the coaches rarely call his number. Go figure.

Secondly, Ben may not be as good as people think. The jury is still out, of course. He deserves a year or two more to prove himself. No question the guy has the talent and the tools, but you can’t let a quarterback get beat up like that week after week and expect him to develop properly. There is no such thing as a good quarterback without a good offensive line.

Speaking of which, this season also has shown the offensive line can’t play with good defenses. The line played so badly against Baltimore that midway through the third quarter I started thinking Pittsburgh might want to forfeit the game just to keep Roethlisberger from getting killed. Trooper that he is, Ben refused to say anything bad about his line after the game, but he didn’t need to. This offensive line is terrible. Not only do they not protect the quarterback, they are unable to open running lanes for Parker. If you can’t pass protect and block, what good are you?

Special teams have sucked all year, but that’s almost a Pittsburgh tradition. I haven’t looked at the numbers, but it seems to me that the Steelers have had bad field position all year long. TV announcers tell us every time Chris Gardocki punts that he’s never had one blocked, but he sure doesn’t offer much in the way of hang-time and distance. On special teams it’s all about fundamentals—blocking, tackling, running, kicking, catching—and Cowher has not been able to establish a special-teams discipline in Pittsburgh.

Wow, what else is there? The Steelers are a team in big trouble. They are weak at far too many positions to remedy with a good draft. If there is a coaching transition (and I’m certain there will be), fans are most likely in for a few lean years. The organization is strong, however, so I don’t look for anything like a complete breakdown. Assuming the new head coach will be a strong leader with a plan, the down time might be minimal. We can only hope.

I agree that Cowher needs to head south. Everyone has noticed his lack of interest on the sidelines including the players, they have to. The Bus was the team leader and now they don't have a leader. This season has been hard to take for die hard fans.

I don't remember any time in the past few years that the Steelers went scoreless a whole game.Cowher in my opinion never was all that great, but he did give us a decent season last year.I haven't seen much football this season but I do know that the team seems to have fallen apart. So hopefully next year with a new coach and another year down the road we might get some decent players in 2008's draft.

I heard Cowher was going to Cleveland next year. I'm not trying to be funny. I really did hear that.

To address a few things:
Matt I agree with most of your points. The team has had trouble in all aspects of the game.
I would like to point out though that a running back is only as good as his line. Getting hit in the backfield will stop most running backs, even Bettis. Santonio Holmes is having one of the best years a rookie reciever has EVER had, excluding Randy Moss. He will be an asset to the team in the future, although I admit I would like a tall fast reciever, and have no idea why Heath Miller is not used more. We wasted a first round pick on a some-time-pass-catching-tackle!

K D, "he gave us a decent season last year"???? Are you SERIOUS???
What would a GOOD season be, or even a GREAT season? I guess the Colts are having a MEDIOCRE season?

As far as areas of concern that should be considered via draft and free agency (LOL), where do they begin? O-line, D back, running back, reciever, kick returner??? Too many areas that are weak.

Lastly, Duce Staley should make the pro bowl as the best sweatsuit wearing, sideline standing "football player" in history.

WOW, after reading my last post, I sound like I hat the Steelers. I am actually a die-hard fan, and miserable when they are sucking. I do admit though that I am not as bad as I used to be, because come Monday morning, I have to get up, go to work, feed and provide for my family regardless of wether they win or lose.....

The defense is still great. Consider how many turnovers have placed the opposition inside the 50. Also consider that special teams has killed the Steelers this year. Santonio Holmes is a great receiver, but he's no returner. Surely there is someone else on the squad with speed and hands who can handle returns.
As for the offense, all year people have been bemoaning the lack of a third down bruiser back since the departure of Jerome Bettis. Where is that kid they drafted out of Virginia Tech? He's huge, fast, and very capable of taking over in short yardage situations. And why, as someone observed in an earlier comment, have they not gone to Heath Miller as much this year? He had a tremendous rookie season. The playcalling has been awful. There are weapons; there is a ground game. The problem, unfortunately, seems to be woefully bad decision-making on the part of the coaching staff.
Also, we need to bring back Bubby. Bubby will lead us to the promise land. Don't act like you don't miss Bubby. You do.

A "decent season" ....You win the Super Bowl and it is a decent season....I guess that could qualify as an understatement. Wow I guess the loud thumping heard around the Tri-state area is the banwagoners from last season jumping off this year. I still root for the Steelers, even though they are pretty bad this year

I have to laugh when I see so many people blame Ben. Especially the same people that scrambled to get #7 attire last year.

This week alone... sacked 9 times, hurried 13 times, knocked down 8 times. Thats 30 pressures in one game. He has been sacked a league leading 36 times this year (remember he sat out a couple of games). Definite issues with the line.

Ben has thrown 19 interceptions this year. Review the footage and you will see that the majority of those were either due to improper routes ran by the wr, tipped passes off of his wr's hands(like 3 against Cleveland alone), playing injured when his coaches should have been resting him or situations in which he was forced to make desperation passes in hopes of a miracle. Granted he has made some bad passes on his own, i'll give him credit for about half and his teammates credit for the other half.

Maybe Ben did something to piss his offensive line off.

I think Willie Parker was correct when he stated that they had lost their drive.

This team was so close so many times, they finally got that One For The Thumb. That has satisfied the veterans of the team. Players like Hartings who is probably in his last year or Faneca who openly admitted that "some of the hunger was gone". Cowher had been labeled as a coach who couldn't win the big one, he won the big one and has nothing else to prove to himself. thus he has nothing driving himself.

This entire team has stunk this year. But its the coaches and veterans that need to be thanked for basically calling it quits. their desires are gone and hungers are fulfilled. Hopefully whoever fills the coaches position next year (Russ Grimm) can reignite a will to win in the Burgh.

K D, how can you not think Cowher has been that great of a coach. You do realize that he has the highest winning percentage of all active coaches and now with a Super Bowl ring is pretty much a lock for the HOF in Canton.

I think that Coach Cowher is a great coach but he has some flaws that just erks me sometimes.Ben is evidently having a bad season so why not try charlie batch? At this point in time it couldn't hurt.Do you also not remember that we lost some games last season enough that could have driven us out of the playoffs? Some people may say we weree just lucky and maybe we were. But I've seen cowher stand out there on the sidelines and laugh when things were going wrong.I'm sorry but this is why I say it was a decent season last year and I am and always will be a Steeler fan.Cowher is lucky Ben is quarterback or we would have no ring on the thumb.Thats all I'm saying.

I think any team who wins a Super bowl is lucky to have thier star players on the team or they would not have won. A coach can't win without good players, and players can't win without a good coach.

"Cowher is lucky Ben is quarterback or we would have no ring on the thumb."

That is probably the most ridiculous statement I have heard this week.

Chuck Noll was lucky Bradshaw was the quarterback then.

If you remember the Super Bowl, it was one of Bens worst games of his career. Ben is lucky that he was drafted by a team that placed the weapons around him to allow him to succeed. Ben is lucky that he had a coach that brought him along slowly like Cowher did.

"Ben is evidently having a bad season so why not try charlie batch?"

Why not bench Ben and play Batch as the season is pretty much gone?
Because Ben was drafted to be the future quarterback of the team. His confidence is shaken and he is still learning. Ben is still a young, very young quarterback. People tend to forget that, most quarterbacks come into the league and dont show signs of success until year 3. Putting Ben on the bench would be detrimental to him and the future of the Steelers. What would the Steelers gain by starting Batch the rest of the season. Giving a quality backup who is on the verge of retirement more game time experience ? WHY ?

Bubby Brister should be the new head coach. Who doesn't love Bubby? He can't speak English very well, but damn could he throw a football hard and inaccurately!

It might give Ben a chance to recoup for next season.Maybe if Cowher gave him a chance to do that in the 1st place maybe we would still be in the season.

Can someone please tell me where all the Steeler jerseys are? I haven't seen one in quite a while. As a matter of fact where is all the Big Ben memorabilia? Doesn't seem to be as many Steeler "fans" around here anymore. Did they all move out of town or what?

How fast things turn. With in one year we have the greatest quarterback in the world and greatest coach in the world. Now we have a coach who isn't a leader and a quarterback who throws nothing but interceptions. I got an idea bring back the Bus because hes the reason the Steelers are losing this year.

Hmmm..... A little quiet from the Steeler nation. Guess they are putting away their Big Ben jerseys. As a Brown fan I will allow you guys (youins) to use our phrase.....wait til next year. Get used to it!

^^^^ Nah, you guys can keep that one. I can honestly say that I dont think next year is going to be much better. We'll be missing a veteran center (Hartings) and unless we can pick up a shut down corner in free agency we will continue to give up massive passing yardage. I think the Running game will be fine with Willie and Davenport (would like to see a lil depth), but only if we can find someone to block for them. The Steelers have already said they want to improve their linebackers, that with the contract extension they gave James Harrison this year, I look for J. Porter to become a victim as many other great Steelers LB's have.

So as far as players, you will see new additions at:
Center (Okobi will probably start the year but he isnt a long time solution)
Possibly an addition at reciever (preferably someone with a little height)
OLB - Porters gone (hope they get something decent out of the trade)
CB - Townsend and Ike are not getting it done, I look for McFadden to step into the starting role plus a free agent addition.
S - Dont be surprised if you see Anthony Smith take the staring position away from Clark.

Oh and lets not forget:
HC - Cowher is most likely gone, Wisenhut or Grimm will have their hands full.

That being said, to many changes at once. So yeah, next year isnt looking much better.

But what the hell, I remember the mid 80's.... we'll be back

Go Steelers !!!

9:54 AM Unlike Cleveland, Pittsburgh has proven they know how to rebuild a program and turn a mediocre team into a contender. We wont need five or six start overs and we wont be getting used to nothing. Take Notes Romeo
