No wait, it gets even better...

by M. Stewart
After reading Fred Miller’s Review account of this week’s East Liverpool Board of Education meeting, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Gary Bonnell has so isolated himself on the board that he no longer can be an effective member, even if his cyberschool conspiracy theories are true. As the mass exodus of students continues, the East Liverpool district remains the laughing stock of the county, the state and the region.

Mr. Bonnell’s most recent tantrum came as a result of Denise Taylor’s reappointment as board president. According to the paper, he threatened and made good on his promise of a “bloody and ugly” scene if Taylor got the reappointment. His was the only dissenting vote.

Bonnell’s problem is that he seems incapable of working with others, and this keeps him from being an effective member of any governing or oversight board. Even if his complaints are valid (and they often are), his distinct lack of social and political skills makes him a liability. I do believe that shouting from the rooftops sometimes is necessary, but if that’s all one does, people tend to shut their windows and turn up the stereo.

We don’t hear much from Superintendent Ken Halbert, who by now has to be wondering why he ever left Wellsville. Of course, dealing with the board is only a small part of his job, but it is the most visible part. When I worked for the papers and covered school board meetings, my notebook typically was filled with quotations from the superintendent. If the newspaper accounts are fair representations of E.L. board meetings, Mr. Halbert doesn’t seem to get a word in edgewise.

The whole thing is crazy, and because Mr. Bonnell is just one year into his term, district residents must assume the fun has just begun. Watching a school district die is a strange experience indeed.

Speaking of crazy, I see where newly appointed county Commissioner Penny Traina is considering keeping her Wellsville School District treasurer position while serving on the commission. What’s even crazier is that the school board has no problem with it.

All I can say is that these jobs must be a whole lot easier than mine. Minimal qualifications and no prior experience can get you not one, but two high-paying jobs on the public dime. Quoted in the Morning Journal, Wellsville BOE vice president Tom Brophey said he “believes both jobs provide Traina with the flexibility needed to perform her duties and fulfill her responsibilities to the county as well as the school district.”

Apparently the County Commissioner Association of Ohio has no problem with it either. After checking with Cheryl Subler, managing director of policy for the CCAO, MoJo writer Tom Giambroni discovered that “the law does not distinguish between what constitutes full-time or part-time status for a commissioner, other than they must attend one meeting every 90 days.”

Attend one meeting every 90 days! That’s all a county commissioner has to do for $63,833. And you can get this kind of job after losing an election? Penny, I’ve got to hand it to you and the Democrats; you’ve figured out how to work the system better than most of us ever dreamed possible. It’s brilliant, really. I’m totally serious about this. Congratulations.

I have nothing against Penny, personally. I just find it hard to believe that she'll be able to do both jobs well. She's been said to work 50 or more hours per week as the school treasurer. How can she continue to do that and the commissioner's job as well? Will she work 50 hours a week as the commissioner? Come on, folks. You can't "give your all" to two different things. You can, however do the best that you can do at those two things. Something will be sacrificed in the process. Either she can't continue as diligently as the treasurer, or she won't be that diligent as commissioner. I feel she should do one or the other.

Matt: Couldn't have said it better myself!!!
Now the question is to see if anyone even cares. I can't wait till the next election. One point... I see the Wellsville Board of Education was going to meet for their "discussion" with Ms Traina on this coming Wednesday, but in this mornings paper it states the meeting is now schedule for Monday evening. Hmmmm. You know, Matt...thinking about this I really am getting of the opinion that if I was Ms Traina I am not so sure if I would even take the job as Commissioner. If the comments on this web site are an indicator of the county's opinion she may only last 2 years. If that is the case, the Treasurer position would be a more secure employment. Just something to consider.

I also see Wellsville has an election coming up. Petitions must be in by Feb 22nd or some date like that. I can't wait to see how some of the complainers on this site identifies and support their candidates prior to the election. After the fact, lends nothing to the process (of course, only my opinion)! No word from existing council if they will run, I wonder what the delay is.

Its too bad that there are no other people that can fill the shoes of either the treasurer or the commissioner. These are good jobs with benefits and she has to have them both? No-one else needs a good paying job in this county?
I guess that the "double-dippers" in Wellsville rubbed off on her.

You write of Bonnell and Traina in the same piece. The EL Board of Education went to court to fill a vacant seat and the judge ruled in favor of Bonnell as to choosing the second vote getter in the previous election. If the same court ruling would hold true for the commissioners shouldn't the second vote getter in the election be appointed commissioner. I think that may be Dave Cranmer, or am I wrong?

in order for penny traina to get the commisioners job she had to be appointed, because she would never be elected. people of columbiana county dont want any wellsville politicians anywhere but in wellsville. everyone hears of the greasy politics of this town and are sick of it. I personally dont dislike penny but i think she bit off more than she can chew.

And now you know why this county is in such dire straits. With the amount we are paying the commissioners for the few hours they must work, no wonder they had to pass the sales tax on to the peasants. When will someone start to hold them accountable? Part-time board members receive more in undeserved medical benefits that they get in pay for their positions. I THINK IT IS TIME TO HOLD FAST TO NO MORE LEVIES until the government becomes more accountable. This is really a joke to the taxpayers. And an indication of the type of people that we have in those positions.

I'm enclosing a letter I wrote to the Review Editor in 2005...It pertained to some of the many reasons for dramatic downfall of the East Liverpool School district THEN and also NOW...Before anybody sees fit to blast me about the LGF fund that I clearly misunderstood, the editor reworded the part concerning the LGF fund before it was published...I'm enclosing the letter as I wrote it...I'm not for or against the cyber school and feel it has it's purpose for students that aren't physically able to attend a regular school setting...On the other hand I know first hand MANY students that do NOT do their own work and abuse their responsibility and Parents that abuse their accountability for school and educating their child/children...While I love my computer I believe that Children desperately NEED physical interaction and social skills with their peers and do not get them sitting in front of a computer...

Whats the point? Home schooling is being practiced in a lot of states now. This is not the only geographical area that traditional schools are failing. Parents are finally being able to take their childrens education into their own hands since the government doesn't do a good job with it and they are able to choose what type of education their children will receive. I believe that it should be the parents choice. Once schools lost accountability to the parents and the community by removing them from the neighnorhoods and placed them in places where children had to start being bused to them, that is the starting point of the failure of education being answerable to the community. The more isolated the schools became, the more the gap came between the schools and the community. Thus with the unfunded no child left behind act more burden has been placed on the public through property taxes for school funding. The traditional schools failed to change with the times, they have failed to update their curriculums to meet society's need. I predict that in the next century, schools as we know them will be unfunded dinosaurs.

5:15 Home Schooling is not the same as the CyberSchool. Please do not confuse the two as they are different as night and day.
Home Schooling might be done by a member of the family that thinks they can do a better job of educating their child at home. No Federal, State or Local funds are used to educate these children.
Cyber School on the other hand is really a way to make MONEY. Sure some children will benefit from the Cyber School, those that have a hard time fitting into traditional classroom settings. The idea was really a political football to start to remove the power from the teachers' unions. Think about it, before the Cyber Schools were around, the teachers went on strike and the kids were the ones that were home with Mom and Dad and not in school. Mom and Dad put pressure on the board to settle and then the cycle repeats itself every few years. I just wish that they didn't hold our kids' education hostage.
By the way, how would you feel if every child that signed up for Cyber School took part of YOUR money, the share that is generated locally with him or her to the Cyber School. This really does take away from the children that are left in the home school district. If the Cyber Schools were held to the same accountability standards as the brick and mortar schools they would be shut down by the State.
This same thought process was behind the idea of Open Enrollment.
Seriously 5:15 you sound intelligent so please get involved in your childs education, attend the School Board meetings and make your school better.

I read with Interest the article about East Liverpool loosing its fight to once again acquire control over the LGF fund... It appears that East Liverpool profited greatly, receiving 54% of the funding for many years before loosing their golden goose... Why aren't the Parents that live In that school district screaming about what happened to all that money and where did it go???? To my knowledge, there have been no new schools built In the last 30 years so who profited from this money ...I was born and raised in East Liverpool...My Husband grew up in Beaver County and we lived in Midland and Ohlovllle for 25 years…We raised two Sons that graduated from western Beaver High school. I have many Nieces and nephews that currently attend both Beaver Local and East Liverpool High school...On many occasions I have had the opportunity to visit both of these schools for various school functions and am totally appalled at the condition that East Liverpool High school is in...I was in one of the first classes that attended the "new” high school...I Can still remember the feeling of pride driving up that hill to school everyday ...Everything about the experience was positive right down to the immaculately kept lawn... Words that express how I felt were, pride, order, stability, consistancy and a sense that within that building the possibility of endless achievement existed...

I have been picking my Niece up several times a week and absolutely none of those feelings exist at that school anymore...Instead I see nothing but chaos and bedlam....The total lack of respect, obedience and any sense of value does not exist Inside or outside that building...I’ve had at least three occasions to visit the high school office, and one of the restrooms…I was disgusted and repulsed at the decline in not only the state of the building itself but the complacency that seems to be totally accepted by students and especially staff members… WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO A“DRESS CODE” ...The building's obvious neglect and disrepair Is offensive to the eyes...somebody attempt at planting flowers by the gym goes almost unnoticed because of the neglect of the rest of the lawn around it...The building's exterior is a major eye sore to be seen long before you have to dodge the pot holes to get through the parking lot to the main entrance...I had the opportunity, (or misfortune) of observing the students standing around, smoking and swearing uncontrollably while waiting for buses to arrive to take them home...How pathetic that this seems to be the norm...one particular event several weeks involving 2 males and 2 females walking across the parking lot towards the main entrance loudly swearing using the word Mother f***** at least 5 times while a Staff member, (identified for me by my Niece), (A TEACHER,THEIR ROLE MODEL) walked as near as 5 steps In front of them, and never once turned to look at the offending student let alone take some type of action... (I'm sitting in my car and could hear ever word spoken by these Kids so If I could hear every word they said (then the Teacher HAD to also hear them)...WHAT WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE???
What has happened to any sense of decency or standards...That apparently no longer exist at East Liverpool High School, I guess that’s "out of style" ???...I do not live In the East Liverpool school district and could not vote for the levy that failed miserably but I'll tell you what...the staff and school Board responsible for the East Liverpool school system, and especially at the High school should be ashamed and embarrassed at the conditions and total lack of standards that are currently In place...Getting that levy to pass Is not helped In any way by neglect and Indifference, actually just the opposite... Every body at some time has to tighten their belt and make the most of a financial crisis...It happens to everybody, but you don't let what you do have go to hell and have the nerve to ask for more money to "fix the problem"...I bet If the tax payers of East Liverpool (that no longer have children attending the schools) would take a ride to the high school and sit in the parking lot to observe their tax $$$$ at work they would be at the next School Board meeting screaming for some changes...Better yet take a walk to the office or visit one of the restrooms...No ceiling tiles, bare cement floors where carpet used to be...It’s disgusting that a school district that has had control of 54% of state funding for how many years has so little to show for and have the nerve to ask for more money ...This is probably why people are pulling their kids from the main stream and electing to educate through cyber schools…They don’t like what they see and either don’t care or don’t know how to create change…The only hope to get that levy passed Is CHANGE, CHANGE, CHANGE, starting with the Officials that you elect to educate your most prized treasures…Our Children are the best hope for “our” future...

It a proven fact that if anybody, especially a child is given encouragement and positive reinforcement they thrive... The same can be said about negative influence...

I see nothing constructive about flip flops, low riding hip hugging torn jeans that drag the ground and revealing breast popping, barely there T shirts... There can't be any kind of dress code going on at ELHS and if there is, it certainly isn't enforced. ..Oh, Maybe that out of style also? I will be the first to admit that I also have Nieces and nephews that, IN MY OPINION, abuse the dress code but am told this is the norm and Kids need to express their Individuality...Looking around all I see are a bunch of followers…Your not raising Leaders because if you were they would not look like every other kid with their pierced tongues, eye brows and fad clothes…A definition of Individuality is as follows…The individual characteristics by which a thing or person is recognized or known as their own…What happened to encouraging a child to be UNIQUE, ONE OF A KIND, SOMEBODY THAT INSPIRES AND RULES, NOT LIKE ALL THE OTHER FREAKS AND GEEKS…Walk your own trail, not somebody else’s…
THAT defines a Leader…
Okay, Now let me have it...

As I said before in my 5:03 post I misunderstood the LGF fund and have since educated myself on what it's function is...So please don't try to reeducate me...I submitted my letter the way it was originally written in 2005...A lot of it does pertain to problems that existed THEN and continues to exist now...
As far as home schooling goes, I don't believe for one minute that your average Parent is equipted to educate their own child...Unless you have a degree and the experience that goes with it your child is missing out on a great deal...You just don't see the effects yet or choice NOT to see it...

6:43 PM
Blogger Jann said...

You don't need me, You need people with backbone that are willing to go back to basics and make demands on students without the fear of being sued by Parents that are afraid of loosing their child as a "FRIEND"...God, forbid Jonny or Jane have to do something that they don't want to do...Stop trying to be their friend and be their Parent!!!Stop bitching and Whining everytime a kid is reprimanded by a Teacher...Most of the time Teachers have little or no support from Parents anyway because Parent's are too busy living "their own life" or are working for that newer vehicle or plastic surgery or beach vacation...I sympathize for all that have NO choice to work and rasie a family...I have adult children and HAVE to work to pay for a 10 year old organ transplant, chemo and radiation bills as well as battling blindness...I also drive a 16 year old vehicle...IT'S ALL ABOUT PRIORITIES...

Yeah, I know that organ and it's 46. Came from some cute chick I hear!

I agree 100% with your statements and as far as Bonnell, he should be in first grade with my granddaughter where first graders act like him. He is no longer effective for the people of East Liverpool due to his tirades. I now consider him a joke and I am very happy that we have Denise, Sue, and Steve on our board who work as a group and try to resolve things. By the way, why does Mr. Halbert never have an opinion on these matters? Where is he?

I am willing to let her prove herself. I pledge to provide her with my total support. I hope each of you will do the same, it is the only right thing to do! Hey, Nick D here. First, thanks for all the positive comments. And also thanks for the rotten ones. Boy what love. Anyways, I have never owned the building at 201 Wells Ave. Cris Mcnicol has owned it since 1995 or 1996. I am in no way connected to what goes on there since I moved from there in 2004. Not that it would be a bad thing. I was operating my business there and paying rent, for about 7 1/2 yrs. I chose to relocate 1 mile up RT 45 in the former Fairview School. The main reason I moved was space. I have a lot of that now, and can now host much larger functions. Those being Wedding, Birthdays, Retirement Parties, etc. The kids love having B-Days there with the Gym, Arcade and lots of room to run and be kids. That's reward enough for me to be a part of the kids having fun.
As for the rest of the crazy posts I've just now caught up on. Thats what they are, crazy. The machines your talking about, I did have 2 of the same kind, months and months ago. They are different in that, unlike regular machines, these ones require a touch of skill. The manufacturer has figured out a way to make them leagal in the state of Ohio. Call it a leagal loophole if you will. One thing that puzzels me is this, I don't understand all of the hoopla about the things. Is it the idea of adults gambling in this Bible belt State. Or is it the notion that they are illeagal, which they are not. I hope that soon I do not read on here about some people fishing on the Ohio River without a fishing liscense. And someone is calling in the calvary on them.
In conclusion, as for my Liquor permit at that site, I sold it to Cris Mcnicol about 3 yrs ago. What he has done with that is his personal business. I can say, it is not connected with the building or its current tennants. Also let me reiterate, I am not running a ring out of that building, with people on the take. I am though, running DaLonzos on the Hill, ( A Restaurant and Banquet Center.)It's located in Hillcrest. Thanks for including me in your thoughts, it's just ashame they're bad thoughts. Nick DaLonzo

You know what Nick (Dalonzo) ..... Matt has tried to tell these ignorant little assholes posting on this blog to watch their step. He, as well as others, have tried to explain slander and libel. Certain indvidual(s) do not seem to listen though. Matt is covered by a recent Supreme Court ruling. He can not be sued because some Imbecile posts on his forum or blog. Those that post these ignorant and defaming comments are not protected. I would love to see the Grand Jury Subpoenas issued to discover who is the one or two little jerks that are posting on here and defaming, slandering, libeling (it is written), and otherwise being a little butt-munch. Yes, there is now a law against being a butt-munch........... Check out the Patriot Act in full.

Somebody better watch their ass! I hope whoever is doing this is not planning on letting your mother/grandmother take the blame when the subpoenas hit the house that your little piece of shit worthless ass is living/crashing at. Keep on posting your bullshit. There are people watching. You can bank on that.....

To Everyone--
Please try to be a little more civil. This stupid nonsense (here and in the Wellsville Room) about who owns what building and whose food is better--it's all getting out of hand.

Here are some suggestions:
If you don't know what you're talking about, don't post comments based merely upon "what you've heard." Instead, if you want to know something, ask a question, and someone who knows will probably answer.

Since we all like different types of food, no one is going to like every restaurant. If you don't like a restaurant, don't go there. Try not trash someone's business here. Nick and Jackie DaLonzo are good people who work hard to provide good Italian food to their customers. Personally, I like Nick's food and I would recommend it to anyone. If you don't like it, tell anyone you want. Just don't do it here.

While I don't expect everyone to be touchy-feely and nice about every issue, stop and think a minute about whom you might be hurting before posting a comment. Make clear distinctions between political and personal differences. That really does matter. Personal attacks are NEVER appropriate in a public forum.

ORL can be a great thing for the community, but only as long as its readers make an effort to keep the discourse civil. It only takes one or two assholes with a computer to make us all look bad. I suggest that we ignore those who refuse to take this forum seriously.

Thank you 6:00 and thank you Matt! I was to the point of joining several of my friends in not coming back to the ORL. It has been totally out of control and juvenile as of late. Hopefully we can get back to what the ORL was meant for in the beginning...Adult discussions on popular issues.

Matt: Just a suggestion! A reformate to require signing in so that everyone on here have to have a name(identity). This requirement would eliminate most if not all of what is going on. Of course, I am not advocating necessarily their true name but a name, i.e. "The Wiz" that others can relate to. I believe there are some people who are posting some ridiculous comments here just to see the reactions and then responds to themselves. I guess they think they might get some laughs, a following or whatever. By having to agree to have an identity they would be accepting responsibility for their posting. Of course their "name" would be tied to their e-mail address that could be tracked very early. It is apparent there are people who are commenting on this site who really do enjoy the opportunity to mingle. If a different direction is not persued I believe you will lose those that you really want to participate. Just my opinion, as usual. Nothing new.

Wiz--That may be the answer. Clearly we have attracted some unwanted readers of late, and something has to be done. Give me a while to discuss options with the other writers. Thanks for the suggestion.

No, Pete F., this site might actually retain those who truly have something to say, and get rid of those who don't. Interpret that any way you want.

It would be hard as hell to pin a comment to one person. For example there are four ORL readers and commenters in my home. So prove which one of us placed what comment? I think that Wiz had a good idea and we do need to figure something out soon

5:20 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

5:20, If nobody admitted to being the one who made the comments, then the responsibility would fall on the homeowner. I believe that is why 6:00 made the statement, "I hope whoever is doing this is not planning on letting your mother/grandmother take the blame when the subpoenas hit the house..."
I'm with you and Wiz. Something needs to be done. I have no problem with Matt knowing who I am because of having to register with an email address. If I want to remain anonymous to the public, I would simply choose a username other than my real name. Although a person will be able to register several usernames using different email addresses, it just might deter the ignorance a little.
Matt could easily check to see if the email account is an active account and if not, he could block that user. If it is active, then Matt would have a way to contact the person to warn him/her if necessary. If the user fails to heed the warnings, then Matt could block that address from posting. It would be a little extra work for Matt in the beginning, but I believe it would benefit the ORL tremendously in the end.

i read everybodys comments about the goofy things people have been writing. someone is writing these comment just to get a stir out of readers. guess what, its working if everyone would ignore the comments eventually this person or persons would give up and go back to looking at porn or playing video games. who ever is writing about the subpoenas, get real ! why waste more tax payers dollars over stupid comments. i have read all dumb comments made and none of them were libel, they were dumb ,some funny but thats it.none of them called anyone gay, said anyone was stealing money or so on. ignore is the best policy.

12:43 In days past neighbors would never lock their doors. Why was that? I would submit they didn't infringe on their neighbors because (1) that was not the way they were raised and (2) if their parents found out they would really be in for a bad day. I'm sure I could come up with many more reasons if I took the time. Today it is a different world if you leave your door unlocked you are saying come in (to anyone wanting to enter). If your door is locked you are saying you may come in if I permit you. I believe the owner of this site has the same prerogative. At least as a member, I am willing to let him run his site as he/her sees fit.
