Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain
by M. Stewart
It’s a sad day for journalism when a newspaper allows an incumbent mayor to submit a prepared statement in lieu of a standard election interview. Wouldn’t you know that the culprit would be The Review.
Today’s edition carries a press release issued by the Surace campaign—a statement carefully crafted (by someone) to eliminate any possibility of the candidate actually having to speak or answer questions. This is a disgrace and an insult, not only to Wellsville voters but to the democratic process itself. As for The Review, any remnant credibility the publication may have had is gone.
By now it’s painfully obvious that what Surace’s Democratic Party handlers fear most is putting the mayor in a position where he’d have to discuss issues in public. Needless to say, an honest debate with challenger Dave Lloyd is out of the question. Why? Because Surace would look like an idiot beside Lloyd, and his people know it.
I ran into a Surace campaign insider the other day on the streets of Liverpool. Although he readily admitted that his man had made any number of bonehead mistakes in office, the only reason he could give for supporting Surace was that the opposing candidate sat out a couple of elections. That’s all they’ve got: that Dave Lloyd didn’t vote in a couple of elections.
Surprising no one, today’s sham Review story includes a list of other people’s accomplishments passed off as Surace’s own good works. The fact is the mayor and his friends have spent the last four years destroying the credibility of village government. But somehow they always manage to show up at other people’s parties to get their pictures taken, don’t they?
One thing is for sure, Wellsville voters have a clear choice in November. They can reclaim village government by electing an intelligent, articulate, competent, well-respected man in Dave Lloyd, or they can have four more years of a mayor who simply does what he’s told.
I guess those who make up what Surace supporters call his “base” prefer the latter scenario. Of course they do; they can’t stand the thought of having a mayor they can’t control. But they’re also starting to feel this one slipping away, and they are most definitely getting nervous.
If I’m so very wrong about this, then why don’t they just let Joe stand up and speak for himself? There’s a little time left. Why not let the mayor out of his cage? Let him face the voters and answer questions. Let him tell the people what he stands for. But please, take your hand out from under his shirt and let him do it in his own words.

Matt, can you tell us what Mayor Swogger has done in regards to his campaign? Not saying he's a bad Mayor, just what does he bring to the public eye? I hope that curtain you speak of has room for one more.
Matt, you've left a little out honey. The mayor has even sweetened the pot a little. See page A5 of the review today, 10/19/07. The mayor has asked Eddie Wilson to return to work, under the recommendation of the investigators. How convenient!! He is pathetic in my opinion and I hope Eddie tells him to....you know the rest.
I really don't know how Surace can face the people of Wellsville if he does not go up against Llyod and answer the peoples questions. Shame on you Mayor for not having the gonads to do so..If he is so well liked, have so many supporters and they feel he is soooo good his followers should encourage him to do so..but we all know this will never happen.
I didn't even read it once I saw that it was from his "cronies", not from him. I felt the same way Matt. What a joke!
Maybe a former Review staffer is now his press secretary?
You got that right Matt!! This man is a fake, no way could he debate anyone, he has sabotaged any efforts to have one. The police are a joke and no one in law enforcement wants anything to do with them. To all the people who been screwed by this police department VOTE. To all the people who been promise something, and didn't get results, VOTE. To all the people who's been lied to VOTE. Tell your friends who don't vote or never voted to do so. 4 more years of Surace will put Wellsville back in fiscal emergency.
To the Mayor of Wellsville.
Dear Mr Surace,we the people challenge you to a public debate. So the press and citzens can ask question or is that to much to ask?
Say what--
Mayor Swoger has interviewed with both papers for election stories. Every time I see Jim around town--and I see him often--he's talking to someone about issues.
To be honest, Swoger faces no serious competition in November. One of the candidates, Bob Griffin, is a township resident who has temporarily rented an apartment in town just so he could run. His motives are entirely personal and transparent. Regardless of the merit of the two write-in candidates, their chances of defeating a reasonably popular incumbent are limited under the circumstances.
By no means am I suggesting that everyone loves Jim Swoger--clearly that's not true--but I've never known him to hide from his constituents or attempt to sidestep a discussion of his record.
It's just me again Matt
Waiting for your reply about page A5 of the Review.
Just me--
I haven't seen a hard-copy of the paper yet. It's a travesty that they buried such an important story and did not publish it online. Obviously The Review is working for the Surace campaign.
Actually, I've known about the Ed Wilson decision since Tuesday. Believe it or not, the information was leaked by the Surace campaign Tuesday afternoon--before the village council meeting. I have refrained from commenting on it pending notification in the newspapers.
I will comment further on the situation once I've read the hard-copy edition.
NO SURPRISE TO ME that 3 weeks before the election, the investigation gave recommedation to have Ed back.. WHAT A JOKE.. Does Surace REALLY think this will make everything all better and the law suit will be dropped?? STICK TO YOUR GUNS ED..
Matt: Don’t want to change this blog’s subject, but just want to provide the response I gave to a commenter on old nib‘s “Looking Out My Window” site. I believe there might be persons here who are interested in the prescription card issue. Sorry for the interruption. Keep going people, your comments are a joy to read.
#1 - Here is my latest update on the prescription savings card issue. First I want to state, I am not finished yet but hope to be shortly. As you are aware not all medicines are covered and although I was not surprised about this I was surprised regarding the percentage of medicines not covered. For example, on the web site it permits you to find what medicines are covered. All I did was submit the following medicines: Spriva, Advair, Lyrica, Ambien, Catapres, Lipator, Plavix, Lisinopril, Starlix and Actos which I should add are rather common medicines. Of these only two are covered. Conclusion of this issue is that you may want to try to find the lowest price by scanning the yellow pages of Pharmacies. The other finding at this time is that when you go into the pharmacy, offer the prescription you want filled, they will then swipe your card and give you the price which you then pay. I should add here you are not obliged to buy at this point, according to the pharmacies I have spoken with. Because people on this site, as well as ORL, have stated they have used the card with good success, when I asked about the retail (cash) price verses the card price I was told they couldn’t give the card price as it depends on the information processed by the card. My interpretation of this is, that the card is collecting data on you, or the prices will fluctuate and not be the same from month to month. You can conclude whatever you wish with this information, that is your choice. Personally I would want to shop for prices, however, that is also your choice.
I will be back as information is collected. Why? So you are not being led to believe something other than the truth. You know what they say…One person can make a different if they only succeed in helping one of their neighbors.
You hit the nail on the head Matt stating that Surace would look like an idiot in a public debate, he doesn't have the intelligence to be able to carry himself in that format. Also he stated in The Review in the Ed Wilson article that when he took office there were personnel problems in the police department that he inherited---excuse me Mr. Mayor, if you think anyone believes that then I have some ocean front property in Texas i'll sell you---you created it and continue to let it happen!!! Wasn't it nice of the Review to hide the Ed Wilson re-instatement in the middle of the paper, great job Review..lol
About the rx discount card, they do not swipe your card. The pharmacy calls and gets the price, and it does flucuate constantly, because the cost of all pharmacuticals flucuate constantly, even if you have no drug plan the cost of your RX can change on a monthly basis. At no time is your card swiped in any machine and date collected on you and your drug usage. Also, according to the pharmacutical companies, drugs and taken on and off the list of covered drugs. People like the card, it is helping your neighbors. Glued to your next installment.
Matt, it's just me, I was glad to get home and see that you received my news of the HIDDEN article on Ed Wilson. Him and my husband are good friends, so I'm sure I'll catch more. Thanks for the coverage
Perhaps the mayor should be charged with drug trafficking like they did Ed Wilson. I want one of them cards!
Every single Citizen of this Village and every Representative from all of the major newspapers should be screaming to get a look at this information from the Attorneys and form their own opinions as to why Ed is being recalled. We paid for this “Investigation” so let us see the results!
I think the process may have backfired on those who thought they were going to use it to get at Ed. I don't look for the contents of the report to ever be made public because I suspect it makes certain other people look foolish. I agree with you, though, Wellsville residents ought to be firing mad about this. By the time it's all over, taxpayers will have payed out the wazoo for this administration's mistakes, and those responsible will be long gone. Maybe that's the strategy--to leave Mayor Lloyd with as much red ink as possible. It sure looks that way.
Matt:
Whatever you are on, I want some. It is good to escape reality sometimes. The plan is leave Lloyd....Year let me know what you're smokin, must be some good shit.
It seems the Suracers have arrived. Now the conversation will become intellectual.
I see Smith auto parts tore down something... I think it was a chimney!? still has yellow caution tape up!
That's good Matt, Mayor Lloyd. It's Dave Lloyd, or Davey as we call him. I can only imagine how many posts you reject now. I remember when the shit hit the fan when more than 2 or 3 posts pertained to Wellsville. When are you moving down here? I heard you moving to our great village.
To Get it--
I reject anonymous comments and those that contain clearly libelous material. Obviously, I don't reject comments just because the poster is an asshole.
To Phil--
The chimney on the Smith Auto Parts building has been crumbling. Bricks fell off last week and nearly hit a Kent State employee as he was walking on the sidewalk. As long as that building stands, the city should erect barriers to keep pedestrians away from it. Someone is going to be injured or killed all because the owner wants to stick it to the town.
[QUOTE: Obviously, I don't reject comments just because the poster is an asshole.]
Thank God because if you did, you'd lose an awful lot of commenters!
Matt:
I dont understand why people in Wellsville should be firing mad over this. People wanted a resolution to the Ed Wilson situation, and that is what we are getting. No one even knows yet if Ed will come to work on Sunday. I hope he does, but until he makes a move, we all just have to be patient and wait and see the entire results. We've waited this long. At least it is moving in the direction of being resolved. So maybe people should be glad. Especially those who have been complaining about it for so long.
Does anyone know how much they want for the Smith building? what is a fair price?
I was going to Beaver Valley Mall yesterday and I see they tried to fix penn ave somewhat... They need a new contractor Joe Lafaro is the worst paver EVER
As of last night I had talked to Eddies' daughter and she did in fact told me that her dad would be on duty this morning and she told me with a devilish grin and smile on her face. We had discussed other things about all that has happened but I will not say what was said because I am not to clear what is going to happen besides the lawsuit. I didn't press her for anything further. We are just going to have to wait and see what happen.
As of now. Eddie should be on duty.
Coming to an end--
People should be angry because the entire charade was completely unnecessary. Strong leadership from the mayor's office would have put a stop to this years ago, saving village taxpayers embarrassment and lots of money. Instead, the PD was allowed to get completely out of control due to a vacuum in village leadership.
I'm not sure Wellsville people realize just how much of a laughing stock their town has become around the county during these past four years. Your mayor is everyone's standing joke. Your police department is like a prime-time sit-com.
That taxpayers had to spend tens of thousands of dollars so someone else could do the mayor's job for him is absolutely ridiculous. How could you not be firing mad about it?
ORL ALERT
We are not the laughing stock of the County. Get the Vindicator today and read about the good things going on in the Ville. Way to Go Wellsville. Congratulations Gine!!!
The flood wall project is a wonderful thing. Gina and all those who worked to bring the project together deserve recognition. I've said this a hundred times. When I say the town has become a laughing stock, it's because of the PD and the mayor. And if you don't think that's true, talk to people outside the village. That can, and I hope will, change with a new administration.
I do not feel that Wellsville is a laughing stock. Many people are proud to live in Wellsville and be a part of this town. & the PD does more than you think.
