Sex, lies and videotape

by Brian DiTullio
Two stories in the news caught my eye this week, neither of them surprised me. The first was New York Governor Elliot Spitzer getting caught with a high-priced call girl and resigning in disgrace. The second was “Girls Gone Wild” creator Joe Francis cutting a plea deal for sex charges in Florida.

The first story, Spitzer, didn’t even make me blink. A high-powered politician who made a career crusading against corruption turns out to have an $80,000 hooker habit? Say it ain’t so.

To echo what has been said ad nauseum over the last few days: If you’re going to pay $5,000 for a prostitute, she better hang around and do the laundry, or at the very least have the common courtesy to bring a few friends.

The Joe Francis “Girls Gone Wild” story, Francis didn’t surprise me either. Francis has enough money and enough lawyers that I’m surprised he’s been in jail this long (11 months).

To tie this all together, bear in mind that politicians have been screwing their constituents and the hookers for as long as man has walked on this earth and declared a pecking order. Also bear in mind that the pimps who provide the hookers always cry innocent when said politician turns on them and has them arrested.

Thus it’s no surprise that Francis is proclaiming his innocence in the Florida sex charges and blaming a corrupt political machine that made him a target of their agenda.

What’s even sadder is that Francis is probably right.

Now, to make myself perfectly clear, Joe Francis is in the Top 10 of “World’s Largest Doucheholes” club, and he’s guilty as hell when it comes to the Nevada tax evasion charges he’s still facing. But to put Francis in jail for allegedly taping 17-year old girls in sexually oriented situations after they lied about their age is the height of hypocrisy.

First, we all know that politicians have a tendency to succumb to corruption, so I call bullshit right there. Second, I worked in a spring break haven for two years and know first hand that once these 18-24 year old girls get away from mommy and daddy and get a little alcohol in their system, pretty much anything goes, especially if someone is holding a video camera.

I can’t tell you in a concise manner how many things and body parts I saw when I had my camera out. I didn’t even have to ask. Once they saw the camera and the reporter credentials, it was party on.

The local radio station out here in Phoenix does a “Spring Break Bust” every morning since the annual event started. It features worried mothers calling in and asking the hosts to call their daughters to find out what’s really going on. While the mother listens silently in the background, the girls usually recount nights of wild drinking, debauchery and degrading acts that you would swear are made up. (I think some are, but you know the line about truth being stranger than fiction). The bit ends with the daughter begging forgiveness from the enraged parent.

So, should Spitzer have resigned? Although Bill Clinton didn’t do anything illegal, he got caught cheating and didn’t have to resign. But he did survive an impeachment, so that argument is mostly moot.

The bottom line is that sex scandals have been and always will be a part of politics no matter the party, country or culture. This is not the downfall of western civilization, but I’m sure many people would argue “Girls Gone Wild” is a harbinger of the end.

Should Joe Francis have sat in jail for 11 months for showing up to places with a video camera where drunken party girls are more than willing to get naked and perform sex acts? Absolutely not. If that’s the case, almost every guy with a camera phone should be sitting in jail right now.

That being said, Francis should be sitting in jail for tax evasion charges. If I gotta pay Uncle Sam, then so should that waste of oxygen.

Before the comments come, here is my stance on porn, prostitution and partying naked on spring break:

Porn: Absolutely nothing wrong with it as long as all subjects are willing. I’d rather be exposed to nudity than mass slaughter.

Prostitution: The oldest profession in the world. We’ll never stop it, so we may as well legalize it and protect the workers. This is an arguable point for sure, and it’s not worth getting into. There is no “right” answer to this question in my opinion. Both sides of the argument have valid points.

Spring Break Partying: I think everyone, at some point in their life, should be able to cut loose and “go wild”—girls included. That being said, at some point you have to ask yourself, “Am I really having fun, or am I just being an idiot for the sake of being an idiot?” Once you hit that question point, it’s time to dial it down and take stock of the situation.

You get the picture.

I'm not one for the whole 'blog' thing. Until seeing this blog, I realized blogs seemed to be for the insecure, severely opinionated person, that felt the need to toot their own horn and was their sorry way to feel important. I dont need my face plastered on a web page to feel important. This blog is different, it's refreshing to learn and see the different aspects of East Liverpool, hence the name of the blog.
When a topic like this is showcased, I think we all realize this garbage is in our society, no one is surprised, lets move on.
It's disappointing that so much time and energy was wasted on a topic like this.
It happened, we all know it exists. It's just disappointing that we don't have a topic of any meaning or worthiness of discussion today.

As a biker chick myself, believe me, you speak the truth. Go to some of the biker events I do and you wouldn't believe how the women (and men) act. I've seen people performing sex acts right out in the middle of a parking lot, people walking around stark naked, you name it.
I agree with you: as long as they are willing participants, it's no one's business (I draw the line at juveniles, however).
And if people like myself were offended, we could leave. No one held a gun at our head to keep us there.
I also agree prostitution should be legalized. Any woman in this country can go have sex with as many men as she wants, whether they are single, married, what-have-you and no one can do a thing about it. Let her get a dime for it and it's illegal.
Stupid. As you say, legalize it, regulate it and tax it. As long as the prostitutes are of legal age and willing, whose business is it if they want to sell their bodies?

As for your quote:
"I can’t tell you in a concise manner how many things and body parts I saw when I had my camera out. I didn’t even have to ask. Once they saw the camera and the reporter credentials, it was party on."

What the hell kind of paper did you work for and what kind of story were you writing?

Brian is the voice of the voiceless. He is the defender of the freedoms of the women of the night.

Just yesterday, for example, I was on the phone with Brian and I was telling him of my bizarre run-in this weekend with an overzealous hooker at a Las Vegas casino. This hooker--dressed like the Chief Executive Officer of a multinational corporation--victimized me by giving me an unsolicited, unprovoked crotch grab.

Now, I'm a young, single man, and usually I'm a big supporter of surprise crotch grabs by aggressive non-hooker women, but not by hookers themselves.

When I told Brian that I responded to her by saying "I bid you good night, hooker," and ran from her crotch-grabbing hands, he said to me: "Well, I would have been a little nicer to her."

Brian is an ambassador of benevolence for whores near and far!

Oh, and kudos, Brian, for giving props to the Johnjay and Rich morning show. Spring Break Bust is something I look forward to every year. It's hilarious and also painful. But mostly hilarious.

"I think everyone, at some point in their life, should be able to cut loose and “go wild”—girls included."

I had that very same thought, Brian, when I saw this. It made me think of the Bohemian Club, among other things. I have always hated the fact that some powerful politicians are allowed to go somewhere away from prying eyes, worship a 40 - foot owl and whatever else we might speculate about.

But in our 'polite' society, there is no place where our tribe can get not just wild and crazy, but physically ridiculous. I mean there are, but these things are thought of as only for those on the fringes. That's a lie. So people in power who are supposed to represent this rtational polite society have to go nuts trying to suppress it or hide it. Same for anyone who is a public person.

We all need our outlet. I think the Seinfeld line is true:
"Serenity now, Insanity later."

I was writing for the local daily newspaper. I used to live in Lake Havasu City and as part of our Spring Break coverage, we would go down and interview visiting college students.

But the mere fact I had a camera seemed to unleash the inner beast in some of the girls.

Let me be clear: I never asked one girl to do anything remotely pornographic.

I'd hold up my camera to take a shot of people partying, and as soon as the people noticed me, tops would get flung up, bottoms would get pulled down and I'd be stuck with a bunch of pictures I couldn't use because it was for a daily newspaper.

Walking the boardwalk in the Bridgewater Channel of Lake Havasu City during Spring Break or a summer holiday weekend is an experience like none other.

The girls who ham it up for free could be called "idiots", but I wouldn't call the guy who pulled all that loot by taking advantage of the situation a "waste of oxygen". That might be business genius.

Joe Francis definitely walks that fine line of "Do you look up to him, or do you revile him?" based on his product.

Personally, if a guy wants to make money off of stupid people, more power to him. And in that sense, I have no problem with Joe Francis. He's a brilliant businessman and there is no question there -- except maybe when it comes to paying his taxes. The IRS WILL find you.

However, he is a slimeball when you look at how he conducts his business.

What differentiates Playboy from other magazines that feature naked women is how his girls are treated. Hef's company does approach it like a complete business, i.e, you take care of those who take care of you.

While there still are many stories of girls who tried to make it big through that magazine and failed, I don't think I'm going out on a ledge here and saying most of them only have themselves to blame.

If you watch "The Girls Next Door," as my wife does every week, you do see there actually is respect there, something Girls Gone Wild doesn't even remotely have.

Francis signs up the girls, gets what he wants and then disposes of them. While a totally male perspective may result in high fives for that action, I'm not that misogynistic.

I love watching naked women bounce around on TV just as much as the next guy, I'm not trying to be a hypocrate here. I've watched Girls Gone Wild videos. I also recognize that if I had a daughter, and she chose the modeling naked route, I would hope she had enough sense to go toward Hugh Hefner before Joe Francis.

Like I said, no easy answers, valid arguments for both sides -- I've got a headache now.

Thanks for the comment Melody

Brian
