Joe the plumber
by M. Stewart
Not a good week for local professionals. The newspapers reported that a Calcutta physician and an East Liverpool attorney have found themselves in trouble with the law.
According to the Morning Journal, Dr. Joseph Sitarik, a surgeon, was charged with “possession of drug paraphernalia, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to control” after police found his wife’s vehicle abandoned on River Road last week. As for what police found inside the car, I suggest looking at the MoJo story yourself.
According to the Review, East Liverpool attorney Richard Hoppel “was arrested by city police Chief Mike McVay on five counts of passing bad checks.” Again, check the paper for details.
Obviously, the timing of these incidents is a coincidence, but it does underscore the fact that successful professionals share some of the same problems as Joe Six Pack and Joe the plumber, those people we keep hearing about in national politics.
Speaking of the Joes, both John McCain and Barack Obama last night one-upped Sarah Palin by referring to an Ohio fellow named Joe the plumber. I guess Joe is supposed to represent the average working stiff. I don’t know about you, but the plumbers I’ve dealt with over the years make pretty good money—at least as much as some physicians and attorneys. So don’t be fooled by the blue jeans and tee shirts.
Also, that whole split-screen stuff in the debates tells a lot, doesn’t it? I found myself watching the guy who was not speaking and couldn’t help but notice McCain’s bizarre listening demeanor. What’s with the freaky face? He looked like an ax-murderer right before the kill.
Have you also noticed that Obama often refers to McCain as “John,” while McCain does not return the familiarity? It’s “Senator Obama” or “That One,” never “Barack.” I’m not sure what to make of it, but I did notice it.
Behind in every poll, McCain pushed the personal attacks hard in last night’s debate. Actually, that’s pretty standard for someone who’s already lost the issues debate, so it was no surprise. McCain also clearly had all he was going to take of the George W. Bush comparison, and I liked his response. I think we all understand why he wouldn’t want to be associated with one of the most reviled and ineffective administrations in American history.
In the final analysis, I like John McCain. He seems like a decent man with solid values. It is his choice for vice president that will cost him the election. Let’s put it this way: If Barack Obama had been given the opportunity to select McCain’s running mate for him, he would have chosen Sarah Palin.
Check out this interview with Anchorage Daily News columnist Michael Carey, who knows Gov. Palin better than any of us. It’s easy to make fun of Sarah Palin, but Carey avoids that in favor of a frank discussion about the candidate from an Alaskan point of view.
Lastly, let me thank representatives from the Ohio Arts Council for spending all day Wednesday in East Liverpool listening and talking to people about promoting the arts in our community. I found the meetings I attended extremely useful and informative.

Nice to think these are the people we trust our health/lives/legal needs to, isn't it?
McCain's best statement of the night was this paraphrase:
"You say you're going to cut taxes for 95% of Americans - but why would you want to raise any American's taxes in a time like this?"
I think this was the best thing he could have said.
I would have also liked him to mention that 50% of Obama's tax cuts are going to people that don't pay any income tax right now. At least that's the figure they gave in post-debate analysis.
M,
I think you don't know what you're talking about when it comes to politics and this presidential election. You teach English and journalism and you're pretty good at that, but your a zero when it comes to politics.
Poor Joe The Plumber. Now that he dared speak ill of Saint Obama, his entire past is being investigated and flayed open for public consumption.
If you don't think this is a violation of free speech, you're living in a fantasy world. Whether you agreed with Joe or not, he's an American with a right to his opinion. He should have been able to tell Saint Obama anything he wants without 12 news trucks on his yard and his past being investigated by every 60 Minutes crew available.
This reminds me of a certain punk rock song by The Clash, "Know Your Rights," and the one verse in it.
"You have The right to free speech (as long as you're not dumb enough to actually try it)!!"
I would bet good money that if Joe could go back and do it again, he'd keep his mouth shut.
So, yeah, go ahead and vote for Obama, he's gonna waaaayyy different than Emporer Bush and Czar Cheney. Other than not having a speech impediment, I'm starting to see there is no difference between Bush and Obama. They're both a bunch of money-grubbing, power-grabbing jack-asses who don't give two shits about us.
(Yes, I'm pissed right now)

Politically astute--
I don't hear you contributing anything at all to the discussion. Instead, you imply that just because you disagree with something I wrote, that I know nothing about politics. Let me ask you why you think you know so much more than I do. What credentials do you have? What makes you "politically astute"? Again, you said absolutely nothing in your comment except that you think I am ignorant.
shit, i think they should dig into joe's life and find out just how full of shit the guy is. sorry but no plumber makes over $250,000 annually. My dad, a small biz owner a decade ago and who made only $130,000 annually, had a plumber associate. A small biz man who owned a biz and employed six people --- he made about the same as my dad. Joe the plumber is full of shit.
and sorry, if i made $250,000 annually, I wouldn't give shit one about paying a four percent increase in taxes if it meant that more national programs could be implemented.
maybe a four percent tax increase would be an inspiration to dump that SUV or the pool in the back yard.
M,
You seem to put together your political agenda/opinions by relying on one source for your information. No balance. In other words, you are just repeating what you've heard some other fool say. The arrogance of your style equates to political stupidity.
Must one always contribute to your incredibly shallow rhetoric? Don't count on it.
Allegedly Politically Astute--
Just as I thought. You have nothing to say other than you don't like what I write. You bring no argument or idea of your own to the table. I hate to be the one to tell you, but there's nothing astute about that.
When people have nothing to say, they tend to make what's called "ad hominem" arguments. That's exactly what you and John McCain are doing. Maybe you haven't noticed that he's not doing too well.
Add another "professional" to the list for this week: Coach Pat McNicol
Well, well, well. Looks like Joe the Plumber isn't a licensed plumber (nor does he think he should have to get one); he also owes back taxes and doesn't belong to the local union; his real name isn't Joe; and he's just admitted that he may not be subject to Obama tax increases because his PERSONAL income doesn't go beyond $250,000. The tax increase doesn't apply, you see, to business income. Tomorrow we'll find out that Joe was hired by the McCain campaign. Sad thing is, he was on TV just yesterday, blushing over all the attention, mentioning that he's a working man with a son and how his son thought it was cool he was mentioned in the debate. Liar. Tomorrow we'll also find out that --- surprise --- he's a hick-prick who likes bass boats, fishing rods, dogs and recliners. Oh wait, there's an AP story on that also.
The Joe the Plumber portion of John McCain's debate was not the best argument. And I don't think its because Joe the Plumber is actually a fraud.
It's because the argument wasn't very convincing. He relied on it waaaaaay too much. It was about as effective as SNL's attempt at parodying the debate. Neither did what it was designed to do.
That being said, the concept McCain was trying to put out was correct. There are many people in America that will be paying additional taxes - 5% is still a lot.
I'd rather no one was paying additional taxes. 100%.
I usually think Bill O'Reilly is full of hot air, but he made a point that really made me think last night. They showed a clip of the debate where Barack Obama said he would raise the capital gains tax.
Well as O'Reilly pointed out - there IS NO CAPITAL GAINS TAX. So it is a new creation. And then O'Reilly further stated that not only is there no capital gains tax, there's also no capital gains right now.
The stock market is in shambles. We are losing money. Why would we want to tax people's meager (if any) capital gains when it almost makes sense not to invest at all?
No capital gains tax? Huh? Did they eliminate it while I wasn't looking? That's possible, I suppose, but I really hadn't heard that the capital gains tax had been repealed.
Jeff,
You've proved my point here. I could care less what Joe is lying about, or what he's up to. The only reason ANYONE is digging into Joe's past is because he was dumb enough to exercise his free speech rights.
The digging into Joe's past under these circumstances violates every aspect of the first amendment.
The message here is clear: Speak up in a way that gains national attention at your own risk.
I can tell you I've learned that lesson. If I'm ever at an event where I'm given a chance to speak my mind, and CNN cameras are present, I'm keeping my mouth shut. Joe will probably be in jail by this time tomorrow.
Once again, just to be perfectly clear, I'm not endorsing or criticizing Joe's statements to Obama. I'm merely pointing out that he spoke his mind, and now he's paying dearly for it -- Something that is supposed to be protected by the First Amendment.
Brian
I was wondering that, too. But I swear O'Reilly said there was no capital gains tax. I must have misunderstood him, or he's lying.
Now that I googled it (should have done this in the first place) it says the federal capital gains tax rate here http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=106799,00.html.
Sorry about that. I don't have a stock portfolio myself, yet.
Yeah, plummers do make as much as Doctors, in the old Soviet Union. And I know History will remember GW as a lousy president........cause Matt says so, we all know how history never corrects itself once the loudmouth's are all dead, no, that never happens. lies will live on forever, and the truth will never be found out.......cause God died in the 60's, remember ? And I'm sure he'll stay dead, cause certain people say so, they'll never have to give an acount......cause they say so,cause they scream the loudest.........let's wait and see.....Enemy of Marx
Brian--
It was McCain who brought Joe the plumber into the limelight, right? Maybe I'm wrong. Did Obama bring him up first? Can't remember. Either way, since he became such a centerpiece of the presidential debate, it's only natural that he'd become an object of interest for the media.
Enemy--
I don't think history will remember George W. Bush as a lousy president because I say so. It will be because he was a lousy president. His fault, not mine.
object of interest I can go with.
Digging into his voting records, tax returns, business license, etc.
That's where the line was crossed.
Brian
nah, brian, no violation of First Amendment was committed here. He spoke his mind, which had secrets of valid consequence, and now everyone in that town who had plumbing work done by him wants their money back --- or water, depending on how bad the leaks were. In a sense, anyone had the right to go digging into joe's statement: they unleashed a political issue that could have huge conequences if the wrong candidate is elected
Brian,
What about the Patriot Act,talk about a first amendment violation!!!!!
Don't get me started on the "Patriot" Act.
Welcome to the People's Republic of America!!
Vodka for all the comrades out there.
Brian
I watched the debate, and it was John McCain who brought up the whole Joe the plumber argument. So why are you people blaming Obama for it? The argument's stupid, anyway. As Bill Moyers said the other night on HBO, Joe the Plumber is blaming Obama for ruining his fantasy, not his reality. Joe the plumber isn't even licensed, he owes more than $1,000 already, and he's going to buy out his boss? Maybe he should start with paying the taxes he already owes before he worries about taxes he'll never see.
