Jesus in jeans
by M. StewartFormer Vice President Dick Cheney and former Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin seem to be everywhere in the news these days. Cheney is playing the role of postmortem spin doctor in an effort to alter the widespread perception that the Bush Jr. presidency was a complete failure. Good luck, Dick. You’re gonna need it.
Sarah Palin, on the other hand, remains a tabloid darling. We can only assume that her efforts have something to do with running for president. The way things are going, Palin and Rush Limbaugh may be the only two people left willing to admit they are Republicans in 2012.
Check out this story from the UK’s Daily Telegraph. Who would have thought it would be the British who would finally reduce Jesus of Nazareth to a complete joke. According to the newspaper, Father David Buckley unveiled a seven-foot statue of a dancing Jesus at his church in Uckfield this week. In presenting his hipster prophet, Father Buckley is reported to have said, "You are always looking for new ways to enrich people in the experience of Christianity and it is good people can be open-minded to appreciate it.”
Open-mindedness? Exactly how does turning Jesus into a modern urban hipster “enrich people in the experience of Christianity”? One might have expected a stunt like this from a bunch of American evangelicals, but the Catholic Church? I know the Catholics love their idols, but this goes too far. Or maybe it doesn’t go far enough.
Perhaps evangelicals in America will want to one-up the British Papists by coming up with a modern Jesus of their own. Recent polling data suggest that evangelicals—that is, Christians led by self-proclaimed preachers—are much more likely to support government-sponsored torture than other types of Christians.
So let me suggest the creation of a gigantic mural depicting scenes of Jesus dressed up in a Nazi SS uniform torturing Jews. No wait, Arabs. We’ll call it “Mengele Jesus” or “The Gitmo Savior.” It really doesn’t matter what we call it. It’s the thought that counts.

Jesus was a pretty hip guy. What did Jesus do when the party ran out of wine? He made more, the first "beer run," if you will! Jesus was a partier!
This story is completely ridiculous. The only reason for putting it up is to bash the republicans and Christianity. It's not news nor even remotely interesting.
Matt, think about what trash you are putting up online for people to read. You're turning a nice blog about life in a struggling small town on the Ohio river into a hate monger web site no better than the skin heads or the racist you so frequently make fun of. I guess fools come in all sizes and shapes. Sometimes I think you put this trash up online just so your little buddy Jeff Martin will have someplace to show off his infantile attitude with comment.
Matt,
Is it just me, or are you obsessed with Jesus?
Jeff--I am obsessed with Jesus, yes. He's in the news a lot.
Cowabunga--Republicans are fun to bash. Nothing personal, and sorry if you are one. And like I told Jeff, I love Jesus but don't like what the Christians do to him. I read the online papers and this stuff just jumps out at me. I see myself as a defender of the faith on a mission from many false gods.
At least I don't hide behind the handle "Cowabunga."
Yeah, Jesus is in the news a lot, but so is Viagra.
Matt,
You reap what you sow.
Cowabunga--
So you got my point after all.
You're just a little liberal puke. And a dumbass. Need your ass kicked.
Again, my point gets made.
How exactly is your point being made?
As Cowabunga put it: You reap what you sow. Given the topic at hand, that a right-wing evangelical would respond to my comments by threatening violence validates the poll data. Why bother with that pansy peacenik Jesus? Just kick ass and torture people, right?
M,
Actually I was speaking of you, not the content of your piece.
I'm perfectly content with the seeds I sow. As a result, I enjoy an abundant harvest of wonderful family and friends and a good life. In my book, anyone who speaks out against glaring hypocrisy is doing the right thing.
M, am I missing something? How did you determine that the threatening comments were made by a right-wing evangelical? There was nothing Christ-like in those words.
Also, I'm a right leaning conservative and so is my crowd and I don't anyone who would say they were okay with torture.
M,
And the judge of what is or is not hypocracy is, of course, you?
What makes you think you're qualified to judge?
I'm not saying there aren't scam artists and con men and women posing as Christians to get their money because there are. And there are many who say and think they are Christians and are not. But there are legitimate people in the church, real Christians who know what they're talking about and do the right thing. Just because something looks a bit odd to you doesn't mean it's not legit or of God. Let me give you some good advice and then I'll let this drop: Be very careful who you make sport of. The toes you step on may just be your own.
Cowabunga--
Qualifications? I'd say that reasonable intelligence, basic morality, and a pinch of good taste is all that's required. And then there is the willingness and ability to publish my thoughts under my own name. Anonymous opinions are easy.
Besides, I don't make sport of good people, only the frauds and the hucksters. If the shoe doesn't fit, don't put it on. Unless you believe in the torture-chamber Jesus or the nutty hip-hop Jesus, what exactly is your argument? I don't invent the stuff; I just comment on it.
Flapjack--
You and your associates must be some of those polled who are not pro-torture. Good for you. On an issue such as this, there is a clear right and wrong side, don't you think?
Torture - Every time someone gets zapped with a stun gun or taser it is a form of torture. Zap Zap They need to be outlowed. And no, I've have never felt either one.
