A poverty industry testimonial
A poster named "Shel" left an insightful comment under my Oct. 2 post. Her comment is one that should be read by every elected official in East Liverpool. To that end, I am posting it on the main page. If you have any doubts about the insidious effect the poverty industry has on our city, read it carefully--especially the last sentence. It speaks volumes. Here it is:
During that time, we had more than one slumlord. One rental, in particular, on Cadmus street was a roach infested hole. When we moved in, we had no idea there were roaches. When we complained the landlord alleged we'd brought them with us - even though our previous address was also owned by her! I was 7 months pregnant when we moved in and was cleaning the mold infested refrigerator out because the previous tenants left it that way. She knew we were desperate and took advantage of us.
In addition to the slum lord problem is the rent problem. Government housing actually drives working families out of the area. Even with our min. wage jobs we had trouble affording housing. They could get more money from government subsidized rents. I was told this on more than one occasion. I had the same issues with childcare.
It has been over 12 years since we've lived in East Liverpool. Low paying jobs and unaffordable rents were part (not the whole) reason we left the area. We live in another part of Ohio now and own our home. While there are renters around us, our neighborhood looks nothing like some of the ones we see when we go back to EL. I am now a teacher and my husband is a manager. We would never move back to East Liverpool.

Matt,
I lived in East Liverpool for two years and at first was very happy there. I thought it was a senior apartment building. By the time I was leaving I found out that the seniors I had come to care about, were being evicted and drug addicts and alcoholics were being moved in and paid for by the government. All of which, Mr. Snow was aware of.
Bernie
Your family was lucky to have you and your husband to realize it was best to move from this area. Once you are a member of the poverty industry in East Liverpool it's almost impossible to escape.
And things are much worse now than when this family left 12 years ago. Please keep hounding this issue Matt. I too hope all of the city leaders take notice to this.
The poverty industry around here also includes the employers. Trying to find a good job within 20 miles of E. Liverpool isn't easy. They know that people in the area will work for less than they will somewhere else.
Slim--
You are absolutely right. The entire East Liverpool economy has been adjusted to serve a low-income, low-expectation population. I am fortunate to have a good job with a progressive employer, but I realize how rare that is in our area. More typical is the employer who exploits workers by paying as little as possible and treating them as expendable, replaceable parts.
I grew on Avondale Street. My parents didn't make much but we got by. My parents didn't want us taking charity/gov't assistance as long as we were all capable of working. They gave free lunches at school, but parents insisted on paying the $.55/day for my brother and I. I’d ask my mom why we did this: we could use the money and it was really easy to sign up! My parents would just say "we aren't that poor". During the summers they had free lunches at the playground but my parents didn't want us signing up for those either. I admit I did sneak in and get one now and then-mostly because I liked the chocolate milk. But when my parents found out, they put a stop to it. They told me that if I learned to depend on others to provide for me, I would never be able to stand on my own two feet. I had no idea what that meant till I moved out on my own.
Growing up, I learned to do odd jobs for money. I mowed lawns, delivered newspapers, picked strawberries, and worked at Long John Silvers and then the country club. At the country club, I would come in early mornings, work w/the greens crew, clean up and go work in the pro shop, then change again and spend the evenings watering the greens and fairways.
My first instinct after getting an apartment was to get two jobs. I didn't seek gov’t assistance. I found ways to improve myself because I knew that was the only way I would get what I wanted. I walked to the library to read programming books. I walked back and forth 2 miles away to Barnes and Noble to read, take notes, and then run back to the library to study more. I found a job paying next to nothing at a computer store so I could use their computers to write software. I stepped into the world of software consulting. After years of working as an independent consultant, I moved to Seattle to take a job w/Microsoft.I’ve now been w/Microsoft for 5 years. I've co-authored 4 books, filed 16 patents and was lucky enough to work directly for Bill Gates before he left full-time work at Microsoft.
Some of my friends by contrast, weren’t taught to fight for themselves. They were on gov’t assistance and never had jobs. They expected things to be handed to them. One of my best friends got into drugs and robbed my parents’ house. He got into a car wreck that ruined his life. Another committed suicide. Another has become addicted to drugs and alcohol.
I don't say all of this to tell you I am great or others are not. I was lucky. It was my parents that made me what I am. It wasn't the town that made me who I am--it was a mentality that said "go get what you want by honest labor". I won't say that the poverty industry has zero effect, but I will say that it truly is up to us to teach our children that gov’t cannot and will not save you or make you happy. There are many people who have grown up in extreme privilege that have everything and yet they too can't escape themselves. How many celebrities have become public spectacles and imploded right in front of us?
I’ve been really fortunately in life. I was handed the 2 things in life–a desire to excel and parents that taught me to do it on my own. We need people willing to train children that don’t have role models. We need people willing to teach our citizens to take pride in their town even when everyone else won’t. We need to teach citizens that the only way to make a difference in their lives is to be different themselves.
Tobin--
Absolutely! You explore one of the many tentacles of the poverty system. When a city turns itself over to the system, it literally becomes a breeding ground for a population made up of dependent personalities. Parents transfer their values to their children, and if those values are built upon a culture of dependence, then the problem replicates generation after generation.
Clearly not everyone in our city is part of the dependency culture, and not everyone who finds themselves in need of public assistance adopts it as a lifestyle, but when you deliberately set up an environment where dependency becomes the dominant visible feature, it eventually seeps into every aspect of the culture.
Our city leaders CAN act to arrest the progress of this disease in our city. Whether they WILL act remains to be seen, but at least they are finally talking about it at city hall, and that's a significant step forward.
Tobin and his mom and dad make me proud to have been born and raised in Liverpool. By avoiding the programs (pogroms?) of the Democrat Party his parents were able to live as free Americans and to pass along those values in their children that maintain that freedom and liberty.
The tenets and doctrine of the contemporary Democratic Party always and everywhere creates a citizenry ependent on the state, a citizenry of slaves.
For pity's sake, Bob, will you please get over these polemics. At least here in East Liverpool, we're all in this together. Blaming a political party for all of our problems doesn't solve anything. I would be willing to bet that those who profit most from the poverty system are conservatives, who don't mind exploiting anyone for money, but saying that doesn't help solve the problem.
At least on this issue, we need to find areas of agreement so we can all work together to raise everyone's consciousness about the poverty industry. I'm sure that idea commie-Marxist-Democrat to you, but you might give it a try anyway.
Bob--What's your opinion on Craig Newbold?
Matthew,
In my above post I never once used the phrase "commie-Dem," and I thought I'd get a little credit for that...but, nooooo!
Now Matt, I've got to give you credit for opening this analysis of the 'Liverpool poverty industry' and we must keep in mind that we've got to explore it openly and honestly. And, as you know, it's the Democratic Party's policies/legislation that by and large has been and is being implemented in Liverpool and across this land. So, Matt old buddy, let's shoot for the truth of stuff here and maybe, just maybe, we can come to some interesting conclusions. But, above all you're going to have to account for the despair and destruction your party has caused.
If you can't do that, why in heaven's name, are you even engaging in this conversation.
Bob, In an earlier post you said you know you are annoying. If you know this and continue with that type of behavior I conclude you must get some perverse pleasure from it. I would add to your assessment that you lack respect, manners, and common sense.Don't bother to respond to me. I won't read it because I think you are a crackpot.
Salineville: Don't know him, but I ain't votin' for Bolen.
Bud: "crackpot!" moi? Oh,yeah!
Sometimes, Bud, annoying people makes SOME of them THINK about their foolishness..there are exceptions, Bud.
Bob--
What's wrong with Linda Bolen, besides the fact that she's a Democrat? Do you know anything about her? I assume you're voting for Newbold then. According to his campaign literature, he is a classic north-county Republican Christian Reconstructionist--i.e., your kinda guy.
You know Matt, first you yell at me for being annoying; you hurt my feelings, then you want me to tell you why I don't like Bolen's politics.
Well, I don't know Bolen and you're right, as a Democrat she's undoubtedly an elitist-statist, pro-abortion, and agrees with Imam Barry re: transferring wealth from the producers to the professional welfare recipients.
I really don't think the Democrat Party is an American institution; it more closely resembles something from the Eastern block countries, Venezuela, or Cuba. Voting Democrat is voting to destroy what's left of America.
Linda Bolon is a very nice lady. However, as a legislator, I don't tend to think she's very effective. She's a fairly party-line voter, but that's pretty typical no matter where you are from or what party you are in.
I get a little turned off by Newbold. I always have ever since he had disgraced former-governor Bob Taft speak at his academy a few years back.
I also remember reading about Newbold seeking government funding (see: pork) for his school or some project he was working on. I know the culture is to get whatever you can from government - but I'd prefer a culture change.
Linda Bolon is no hero, but she's no villain either. I'd stick with the status quo.
"What's wrong with Linda Bolen?" The Question should be "What has Linda Bolen done for Columbiana County?"
Groom: I thought Newbold receives Government funding for his non-profit, faith-based school. I guess that makes him part of the commie-republican establishment. Maybe Bob can clarify for us!
Has anyone ever contacted Linda Bolen's office? I have! Two years ago and am still waiting to hear back from them. I am sure if I contacted them now, being election time, I would get immediate response. Craig Newbold has my vote. As an ELO citizen, I can attest that he has brought jobs to the city as well as a school. As far as him being from the north part of the county, oh well! Hes done more for ELO than Bolen has and hes not in office yet. Being a christian, well I guess in your eyes Matt that is a bad thing. LOL. So is being a Republican. When are you going to see past political parties? The Dems in ELO obviously arent doing something right! Time for a change in ELO!
If you ever wonder what is wrong with this area, look no further than the comments from Groom. He is the typical voter in Columbiana County. "I'd stick with the status quo". He would rather vote for someone who he says is ineffective than someone who brought a sitting Govkernor to East Liverpool. Then he makes statements that are not even true. The funds that Newbold received were not for his school, they were for a program that was set up to provide funding for new businesses in the county. The money he received actually cost Newbold $ 142,000 of his own money after he paid matching funds and payments for services. There is a choice this election on who we send to Columbus. Someone who has been an ineffective legislator or someone that has a proven record in creating jobs and more importantly, he has solutions for what is wrong with this area. He has spent millions of his own money to try and make a difference in East Liverpool yet some people will stick with the status quo. One more thing , what is a classic north county Republican Christian Reconstructionist? I'm sort of confused on that one.
rw--
When Mr. Newbold came back to this area, I thought he was a man of vision who was capable of putting good ideas into action. His interest in East Liverpool seemed genuine, and I thought he might be an important part of a process that could help push our city forward.
Then I started to wonder why someone who seemed to be so high on the future of East Liverpool chose to live in Columbiana. I also noticed that the interest he had in education seemed to be more of a way to advance his religious beliefs rather than something that would truly help the town.
My disillusionment came when he started buying up buildings in the city only to leave the vast majority to sit and rot. With his "vision" for East Liverpool still far from reaching anything close to fruition, he seemed to lose interest and run for state office. When I saw the campaign material he distributed at last summer's events, I realized that he was just another Christian preacher whose only political message was a bunch a right-wing religious platitudes. In other words, we should vote for him because he is religious.
Once he hooked up with Dave Johnson and the north county Republicans, Newbold's interest in East Liverpool vanished. Because Newbold doesn't live here, he has no real stake in the city, and we all know the kind of aggressive contempt Johnson and Co. have for East Liverpool. You talk about him spending "millions of his own money to try and make a difference in East Liverpool," but what difference has he made? He brought the Christian school downtown, tore down a perfectly good building beside it, and then walked away. He bought the Elks building and turned it into a drunk tank. He bought the YMCA building and left it sit. He bought the Little Building and did nothing with it. He bought the Crooks building and the old Woolworths and let them sit.
I can't help but wonder why we would want a guy whose big achievement is buying old buildings and abandoning them to represent us in Columbus. Maybe he'll go there and become a prayer leader in the state capitol, but I see very little evidence that he can be an effective public servant.
To say that I am disappointed in Mr. Newbold is an understatement, and your arguments do not persuade.
Hey, thanks boys and girls for the edumacation on ELO..and I mean that. I didn't know this stuff, about both Bolton and Mr. Newbold.
I'm votin' Newbold primarily because he doens't advocate killin' his young. For me, and perhaps I'm wrong, a political party that advocates killin' its young is really, really screwed up in a Darwinian/homosexual kind a way.
Bolton is the Christine O'Donnell of Columbiana County. A smiley face with an airhead. Not that there's anything wrong with airheads but I don't want them representing me in the legislature.
Re: Newbold, I dunno his 'plan'. I didn't know the dude bought those bldgs. so thanks for that but the fact that they're sittin' there rather than housing hundreds of bidnesses that employee thousands of needy tri-state folks, I dunno. But, maybe, just maybe that's what the dude would like to do. And, maybe, just maybe, he's gotta a plan but Imam Barry's economically disasterous policies have him screwed up...HAS ANYONE ASKED THE MAN RATHER THAN MOCK HIM AS A FOLLOWER OF THE LOGOS, THE WORD INCARNATE, JESUS CHRIST? Of course, the answer is NO!
Matt, you are so predictable, but then all elitist-statist are! You people have been screwing this country up, as Glen Beck says, since Teddy Roosevelt's time, then you say how you and Imam Barry are "uniters not dividers,"...pleazzzzzzz!
But, I'm here to hep!
I don't know what you do, Bob, but I've spent the last 33 years of my life making a difference in the lives of young people, raising successful children, and serving my community as a journalist and educator. So for you to come to my house and tell me I've been "screwing up the country," all I have to say is FUCK YOU.
hey matt, if obama could handle the righty nuts the way you do he would be a shoe in for a second term.
No reason to hate Bob. He just has no manners.
M, notice how Bob decides that Linda Bolon is a 'killer of our youth' but he admits he doesn't even know her or anything about her? He insults everyone that doesn't agree with his radical mind set by lumping them together and calling them nasty names. He thinks it makes him charming and funny. I wasn't sure who to vote for until now. If Bob is voting for Newbold, I'm voting for Bolon.
I am pretty much going to agree with Butch's comments about Bob. It's funny how someone who talks about being a Christian and drops God's name around the way he does sees nothing wrong with name calling and insults. Of course, he is a great example of why calling yourself a Christian means absolutely nothing in the real world.
I am guessing Bob has no friends and so has to resort to posting his "intellectual" jabs to get attention...
Please keep posting Bob because you really are amusing and fortunately, no one takes you seriously
Matt, It looks like you have had enough of Bob. He has tried to ruin other sites with his hate and phony christianity. I am an independent voter who leans conservative, but its people like Bob that make me ashamed to admit it. I urge every voter to vote for the candidate and not the party.
Tobin,
Outstanding! That is the great thing about this country, no matter your political affiliation; we are only limited by our desire and ambition to succeed. We can create our own destinies if the work ethic is there. You can teach an uneducated person but you can’t work a lazy person.
Bob,
Read the article you referred to me a while back and the conclusion I came to was supply and demand. As long and the demand for hand outs exist we will supply the necessary goods until we implode, because we like to get re-elected.
Matt
Well said, the word is without a doubt disappointment when it comes to Newbold. A while back you wanted to know when the last Republican was mayor in the “Pool”, I did some homework and have a list of mayors when East Liverpool was incorporated up to the present but not the party affiliation. Maybe someone out there would be able to help out.

Susan, Ann, and others--
Unfortunately, Bob has become toxic and has worn out his welcome here. If and when he learns some basic manners, he can return, but until that time, he'll have to find somewhere else to spit his venom.
Small Appalachia towns such as East Liverpool, Wellsville, and countless others are "exit only" towns for young people who want a future for their family.
I don’t know Mr. Newbold personally but I have had meetings with him and people from Newlife. Matt, for someone with journalistic skills, you should investigate further prior to stating assumptions rather than facts. If you wondered why someone was so big on East Liverpool would live in Columbiana, why don’t you just ask him. He told us at the first meeting I ever attended with him. When he first approached his wife about returning to this area, she said she would as long as she could live in Columbiana.
As far as him buying up buildings and letting them sit. Can you tell me anyone in the city that has invested more into the city than Mr. Newbold in the last 5 years? Have you seen the inside of the Old Ohio Power building?
When you say his campaign literature is filled with religious platitudes? What do you mean? In fact I just looked at his website and I’m still looking for those religious platitudes. I think you are making assumptions because of his associations with the Christian School.
You seem to have distain for Mr.Newbold because he “hooked up with Dave Johnson”. You don’t seem to have any comment about his association with any democrats. If you go into the entrance of his building you will notice pictures of him with just as many democrats as republicans. I know for a fact that if Jason Altmire could vote in Columbiana County, his vote would be for Mr. Newbold.
You wonder what if any difference he has made in anyone’s lives in East Liverpool. Why don’t you ask any of his graduates of Newlife. I believe the job placement was at around 90%. Also look up Newlife sales and employees at Manta.com.
I remember going to one meeting downtown where an employee of Newlife was speaking about the vision Mr. Newbold has for East Liverpool. I forget the gentleman’s name but he had worked with Mr. Newbold before and he was from Chicago. He had been here a while but he was returning to Chicago later in the month. I remember him talking about all the roadblocks from the local and state government. But one thing that stuck with me was his opinion about the culture here in East Liverpool. He kept saying he didn’t want to offend anyone but he said he had never seen an area where the family unit was in such bad shape. He gave examples and he hit the nail on the head. This was a guy from Chicago.
Matt’s view of Mr. Newbold as a religious nut couldn’t be further from the truth. Mr. Newbold has never come across that way at all in any of the meetings I have had with him. As far as his association with the Christian School, Mr. Newbold was approached to help the school. He didn’t come to the school, the school came to him. He wanted to start a very aggressive academic program. I believe it was modeled after a private school in Washington DC. The state wasn’t giving out anymore charters and it would take years to get an accreditation. The Christian School had a need and Mr. Newbold had a need. They tried a partnership. To tell you the truth I don’t know if it will work out or not. I don’t think this area can support an aggressive program like the one he talks about.
Maybe I’m naive but I find it hard to be disappointed in someone who built a company up to 1200 employees, sells that company and instead of enjoying retirement , returns home to try and make a difference. Do I wish he did more, of course I do. Do I know of any one who has done more for the city in the last 5 or 10 years, no. One thing I do know is that there isn’t a comparison between Linda Bolen and Mr. Newbold. This thread is about the poverty industry in the southern part of Columbiana County, its status quo. Unemployment here is status quo. Run down infrastructure is status quo. Bad schools here are status quo. I’m sort of sick of status quo. My kids are going to be graduating in the near future; they will probably leave the area because of status quo. Groom is right, if you want status quo vote for Bolen.
The campaign material I obtained at last summer's Pottery Festival presented Mr. Newbold as primarily a religious candidate. That you did not see these materials is hardly the point. That his wife wants to live in Columbiana is fine with me, but the way I see it, you have to live in a town to really care about it.
Indeed, Mr. Newbold has done a nice job with the Christian School building, but he seems to have abandoned the project that he started with the surrounding properties. Unless I am mistaken, most of the empty buildings in East Liverpool's downtown are owned by Mr. Newbold. You have a long way to go to convince me that this is a positive thing for the city.
Since you brought up this fellow from Chicago, I have to ask what a guy from Chicago would know about families in East Liverpool? How is the family unit doing in Chicago? Better? The truth is that the traditional family has been crumbling across the entire nation for the last 40 years, and it is ripping the social fabric of the country apart. What can Mr. Newbold do about the family unit in East Liverpool from Columbus?
Richard,
Great post. You hit the nail on the head. Unlike Matt, I have spoke to Mr. Newbold and understand his vision, dreams and care for the city. Is he a politician? No. I hope he wins this election because he will be great for East Liverpool.
Matt,
For an educated man and professor, you are being very narrow-minded about Mr. Newbold. All I ask is that you talk with the man. I'm sure you'll find that his vision and yours for East Liverpool are not that different. Let me ask you this, could you buy the buildings he has in the city, renovate other buildings and do the same projects as Mr. Newbold and still have the money to renovate the empty ones he has? All while the city and state not helping his cause? Your political bias and anti Christian attitude is showing in this debate. Meet with the man before spreading more liberal propaganda. He deserves a chance.
Vote Newbold--
You are free to support the candidate of your choice. I have not yet decided whom to support in the Newbold-Bolon election for state rep., but according to you and your friends, I have. You guys are as bad as Bob. If someone doesn't think just like you, they are evil spreaders of "liberal propaganda." As well, I have said nothing at all to suggest that I am supporting Linda Bolon, yet I am spreading liberal propaganda. I think you need to learn what propaganda is before you accuse me of spreading it.
Secondly, I don't go around meeting with candidates unless I happen to know them or bump into them somewhere. I have heard Mr. Newbold speak on more than one occasion and was at least partially responsible for inviting him to speak at a Technology Council luncheon. Long-time readers of ORL know that I have supported Mr. Newbold vociferously on many of his initiatives in the past. So I don't owe anyone an apology for saying what I think about Mr. Newbold or any other public figure. That it doesn't fit with your "savior" view of him is not my concern. In no way, however, am I a spreader of liberal propaganda. I am entitled to my own opinions just as you are.
Thirdly, you say Mr. Newbold is not a politician, but this is simply not true. If you run for political office and are in the process of trying to get people to vote for you, you are a politician. One might argue that you are not a politician until you are elected to political office. Ok, if that's your spin, then we must conclude that Mr. Newbold wants to be a politician. Either way, you can't BE a politician and NOT BE a politician at the same time.
We disagree on Mr. Newbold's commitment and success in East Liverpool. You seem to want to overplay his contribution to the city, and I simply tell you what I see. Neither you nor he is going to convince me that what I see isn't there. What I see is that virtually every empty building in the downtown business district is owned by Mr. Newbold, and I do not see this as a positive thing. If you call this "investing," fine, but I don't.
Newbold supporters are saying that I've called him a "religious nut," which is completely untrue. I said only that from the campaign literature that I've seen, he seems to be more interested in advancing his religious mission than a secular political mission. If that makes him a "religious nut" to you, please speak for yourself. He may have changed his focus since distributing those materials last summer. I don't know.
I always offer candidates the main page of this web site to tell us what they stand for; to date, no one has taken me up on that offer. If Mr. Newbold would like to compose an essay about his candidacy for this Web site, he can do so, as can Ms. Bolon or any other candidate for local public office.
Richard
I am sure the guy is a good man with good intentions, I was an early supporter or at least I was willing to give him the benefit of time to walk the walk along with his talk. With all the talk I have to question if you are so willing to give back to East Liverpool why are you living on an “estate” in Columbiana why not in one of the buildings downtown with a studio apartment? Do I want someone who when things don’t go his way throw a temper tantrum and put for sale signs up then when apologized to take them down? As far as his buying up all the buildings, I have been in them before and after purchase and the only one that didn’t require a huge amount of renovation is where the school is now, the rest are imploding. And why all the veiled talk and secrecy about the future, who is your competitor that you can’t reveal your plans once and for all other than to say old tiring rhetoric. You would like to replicate your East Liverpool success throughout the entire nation, (http://www.american-leader.com/pdf/NewBold%20leaders%20story.pdf) and that would be? The verdict is still out but I am not holding my breath on the outcome, not impressed. But at least he saved the brewery.
M, you are not spreading propaganda, you are making good points about the candidate's claims. I appreciate your honesty.
Matt,
My liberal propaganda comment was dirteced more toward your constant posting of Sarah Palin, religious nuts and whacky Tea Party youtube videos. Your obviously not supporting Newbold based on him buying up old building and leaving them sit. Well let me tell you he still has a plan for those buildings but is receiving no help from the city or state. He doesn't have an endless money stash as some may believe. All I asked was that you gave the guy a little respect for trying. I believe that like any business owner in the city, he may discourged because of city hall. Linda Bolen has done SO MUCH for the city! Hell you cant even get her to respond to a simple email, phone call or letter. She is a joke!
By the way, when did you start censoring on this website. I guess Bob's comments didn't fit in with your opinions, so just censor him. If someone doesn't think just like you, are they going to be banned from ORL? Funny that you blamed me for the same kind of things!
Bob has lost his posting privileges for a while until he learns some basic manners. It's my blog, and I can reject anyone's comments for any reason, including yours. Bob doesn't know the difference between discussion and taunting, between political debate and personal attacks. He needs to grow up.
I don't respect Tea Party people because they truly are nothing but purveyors of propaganda. Sarah Palin is the top dog of that ridiculous movement, and I have disliked her from day one. You confuse opinions with propaganda. Since you don't appear eager to look up what propaganda is, I'll tell you that it is the deliberate distortion of truth or outright lying for political ends. Propaganda is not opinion. Propaganda is an attempt to sway opinion through lying and distortion. That sort of stuff works on people who do not know how to think, but not on those who do.
"What can Mr. Newbold do about the family unit in East Liverpool from Columbus?" That’s a great question Matt. I'm sure your asking because you can't see what the economic situation in this area has done to the family unit. It’s been so depressed here for such a long time we have become immune to the effects. My belief is that not having a job puts a great deal of stress on the family. I believe that having to send your child to an ineffective school has an effect on the family, getting a good education enhances ones confidence and that confidence not only is good for the family but also the community. I think that even improving the infrastructure can have an effect on the family. Great neighborhoods, parks, active towns and community centers. They all offers things that families can do together . In my opinion, there are many things that can come out of Columbus that can improve family life. Do they have all the answers for the family , of course not . But they can have an effect. Creating policies that encourage job growth, good infrastructure, giving back families more of their money and providing quality education opportunities ,these things can all come out of Columbus. We don’t recognize it because it hasn’t been happening. We always settle for status quo.
I don't know too much about Newbold but it was reported in the Review that he had received 300K I believe in federal stimulus money to help people starting business, Laus Deos, but his first big loan recipient according to the Review was reportedly to the wife(?) of a personal employee working for him. I haven't seen anymore awards reported by the Review, however, I hope this doesn't set a precedent for how the rest of the money will be given or loaned out.
Vote Newbold said...

Let me tell you about Bob. Bob jopin another group back in Feb or March of this year. It isa for fun group. It has no political agenda, has nothing to do with politics or religion. It's topic is East Liverpool, to be exact memories of East Liverpool. People recalling living in and growing up in ELO. All fun, all light all upbeat.
Originally Bob was a positive contributor to that group. He added his memories, and others adding theirs triggered additional memories of his as they have with everyone else.
However that "honeymoon" didn't last and Bob began with the political/religious crap. He became rude/crude, insulting annoying, etc. Same as he has on here. He was warned a number of times to no avail. Just before she showed up here the owner of that site kicked him off that site and banned him. She did that because a number of people on that site was complaining to her about him, he had also began treating her the same way on the site. in short he did exactly what he has done here.
He was the only member of that group that was talking
religion/politics, and everything to him had become political or religious or both. and people had asked him to stop it. He doesn't seem to be able to help himself, errrr, or as he would say "hep" himself.
I am a native of East Liverpool. I was born and graduated high school there. I have lived most of the last 40 years near Santa Cruz, California.
I always respected my hometown because of what it was, and cannot accept the way it is. While back on the All Class Reunion a few months ago, it was great to see my family and old friends. I know money is hard press for the city to pay for improvements, but I was in shock to see the bad condition of the streets.
The downtown looked like a giganic parking lot, the old West End that seemed like a city itself in the 50's was almost gone and looked like a ghost town (Division Street had ruts that was 3 feet deep on both sides!) - Lou Holtz freeway full of weeds like trees growing out of the steel of the guard rails! If I was Lou, I would have to tell em to take my name off that sign.
Picking up the newspaper, one whole page out of 6 total pages listed people with drug offenses JUST IN EL! - And always see in the paper where the city council was fighting amongst each other led by Brian Kerr. This so called city council is not serving the people of EL but is tearing our hometown apart. It really is a terrible shame for our proud hometown. Thank God that EL still has a great football team!
