Artillery fire and an after-the-whistle punch

by M. Stewart
North Korea has attacked a South Korean island with artillery fire, setting ablaze at least 70 homes and prompting evacuations. No word on casualties yet, but South Korean government officials are involved in emergency talks in an underground bunker, so they must be taking the aggression seriously. I'm sure the Obama administration will have something to say about the attack today.

Last week an American scientist who recently visited North Korea said the rogue country has developed a new uranium enrichment plant and light-water reactor. Obviously, North Korea is trying to get international attention and appears to be asking for retaliation. South Korea reportedly has returned fire, but the details remain sketchy.

This could turn out to be something big. Stay tuned.

On other, less-important battlefields, Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour was fined a mere $25,000 by the NFL for hitting Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in the face after a Pittsburgh touchdown Sunday afternoon. Seymour was ejected from the game but was not suspended by the league.

Steelers outside linebacker James Harrison, who has been targeted and repeatedly fined by the NFL for playing his position well, was not happy with Seymour's light treatment. Unfortunately, Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin had little to say about the incident. He even went so far in his post-game press conference to praise Seymour for his skilled play. Roethlisberger also said very little about it.

Last night on sports talk radio, former Steelers punter Josh Miller made a big deal about the Steelers' passive reaction to the punching incident. Miller said he was shocked that none of the other offensive players on the field stepped up to defend their quarterback after Seymour decked Roethlisberger right in front of them. Miller has a good point.

What do you think? Should the Steelers have gone after Seymour? And do you think the consequences would have been more severe had it been Tom Brady or Peyton Manning who got punched?

I'll bet that had James Harrison made the attack the fine would have been much steeper.

I guess the NFL is claiming that Seymour got the maximum fine possible, and it was because the punch was considered "fighting", and the NFL collective bargaining agreement has specified fine schedules for various offenses.

Seymour was a second-time offender, and as such, got the maximum fine of $25k.

The reason this is baloney is because Harrison was fined three times this amount for ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A PLAY!

Seymour gets fined only $25 for attempting to do nothing more than hurt Roethlisberger AFTER THE PLAY HAS ENDED!

This is ridiculous. The NFL needs clear rules that are easy to follow when it comes to big hits, like they do with fighting. Right now, the Commissioner is just making up the rules and the punishment on the fly, which is why I hope Roger Goodell dies in a fire.

Apparently sports commentary doesn't get much play here. There are plenty of sports fanatics out there maybe they just don't know how to type.

I only saw one clip of the incident, and Seymour sure looked bush league. And I did see Coach's tepid comment; it surprised me, but I suppose he has to take the political high road.

Ben vs. Brady or Peyton? No comparison. They'd be defended by all around them.
