Thank you, city hall

So often we complain about city hall in these pages. Let me open today's post to offer praise.

A couple of weeks ago I made use of the city's web site to inform the service-safety director that someone had dumped several tires and rolled-up carpets on St. Clair Avenue hill. Yesterday I noticed that the debris had been removed.

I don't know whether the city contacted the property owner for removal or if the street crew took it upon themselves to clean up the mess, but it got done in a timely manner, and we should all appreciate it. So let me be the first to thank the city employees who saw to it that this blight was removed from our streets.

If you live amongst filthy, ignorant hillbillies, you're going to see this sort of roadside dumping on a regular basis. It's part of Appalachian culture. The only thing you can do about it is clean it up.

____________________________

I see where House Republicans in Washington have called an "emergency session" for today to block funding for National Public Radio. I think this is a good idea, and I hope they are successful in getting this done. NPR does not need the money any more than Americans need culture.

But I hope they don't stop with NPR. It's time for Republicans to make a move on all federally subsidized culture. After NPR, they should move to defund the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. As of now, Americans can enjoy the world's largest museum and research complex for free. Especially given that a significant portion of those who visit the Smithsonian are foreigners, this free ride has to stop.

I'm sure most of you are saying, "What's a Smithsonian?" Well, don't worry. Most of you won't ever need to know. All you do need to know is that taxpayers have been supporting this elitist bullshit for almost 200 years.

It's time to start charging visitors to enter this vast museum complex. After all, Americans have to pay hundreds of dollars to see NFL football games and hip-hop concerts, so why not charge the elites to view elite culture? I'm thinking $50 per head for an all-access, one-day ticket to all of the Smithsonian facilities. Does that sound fair? Those who can't afford it aren't the types who would go to the Smithsonian anyway.

Finally, I heard that Tea Party activists are organizing a national Spit-on-a-Teacher Day. Teachers are easy to spot. They're the ones wearing $300 designer jeans and driving flash cars. If this event is successful, it will be followed by a national Shit-on-a-Cop Day and perhaps a Piss-on-a-Fireman Day. Stay tuned to Fox News for more details.

Have you ever SAT down and watched an episode of O'Reilly? Or do you just hate him because your beloved Obama doesn't like him. Hey Vet! WW II vets are supposed to be the most soft-spoken and humble of all the vets --- what happened? As for myself, I have watched O'Reilly, and at times he makes some good points. Then again, it's hard to fucking hear what the other person is saying because, like all loud-mouth Irishmen, he constantly interrupts and rolls over people, a lot like what he did to the president.

Matt...I think the feds should fund in part the Smithsonian, provided that the Smithsonian itself or any of its affiliates do not engage in journalistic practice. Wouldn't you agree?

NPR should be cut from the federal purse strings. That's like ELO City Hall giving money to the Morning Journal, or as it's done everywhere, newspapers joining local chamber of commerce organizations (even sitting on the board!) and then covering them.

Dat naughty.

The planned three-day stay, during which the president is being joined by family and former and current aides, will bring his total time spent at Camp David to all or part of 487 days."

"Yes, that's 487 days. And Camp David is not even where the president has spent the most time when not at the White House: Knoller reports that Mr. Bush has made 77 visits to his ranch in Crawford during his presidency, and spent all or part of 490 days there."

From what I've read, only 1-3% of NPR's funding comes from federal government subsidy.

In a time in which we have a federal annual deficit of over $1 trillion dollars, I don't think its inappropriate to ask NPR to take a cut.

Almost every function of government is going to need to take a greater than 3% cut, so NPR is actually taking less of a hit. By losing so little, NPR will not go out of business.

1:45 PM
Anonymous Yes Us Can said...

Bozo - You struck down nothing. What you did was simply evade the issue with a bit more class than most Teabaggers around here. That's all.

The fact of the matter is the Tea Party is built on racial resentment. Here's emperical evidence that Teabaggers are much more likely to hold views that most would consider racist:

http://depts.washington.edu/uwiser/racepolitics.html

Ignore it all you want, but don't act like you've offered some irrefutible proof to support your position. You haven't. Just because there's a hand full of black folks in the Tea Party doesn't mean shit, except that there's a handful of black folks that are as ignorant to the way the world works as the Teabaggers themselves.

And Herman Cain is a sideshow. No one takes him seriously but a couple of crazy Teabaggers. He has absolutely no hope of winning the Republican nomination, much less the presidency. Nor do any of the other Tea Party candidates. Please, please nominate Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann. It would be the best thing that could ever happen to the Democrats.

What's more the Tea Party is just the most vile and racist element of the Republican party. The fact of the matter is, the whole modern-day operation of the party is built on racial resentment. How else do you explain the Southern Strategy or Reagan kicking off one of his campaigns in Philladelphia, Miss. and invoking state's rights.

Maybe you personally aren't racist, but the party you support certainly is.

2:22 PM
Anonymous Bozo the Clown said...

M; relax, friend I'm here to help.

every single one of you rude, right-wing bootlickers are nothing but a bunch of cowards who wouldn't say a word if you couldn't hide behind your clown masks.

I know its frustrating to be schooled by a clown but we can all learn something from everyone, even a Tea Party clown. And "rude?" Who's calling people racist? Who is calling people ignorant? Who is calling people rude, bootlickers, cowards, and more?

Yes Us Can; Just because there's a hand full of black folks in the Tea Party doesn't mean shit, You need to sharpen your analytical skills a bit. If so, you would realize that I did more than merely show a "handful of black folks" were in the Tea Party. In fact I showed that several black candidates won elections in the South with Tea Party backing. This means that a vast majority of Tea Party people in the south had to vote for "black folks."

What's more the Tea Party is just the most vile and racist element of the Republican party. If again you looked at the election results analytically instead of with a knee-jerk reaction, you see that the Tea Party elected these "black folks" mostly by running them against the hand-picked candidates of the Republican Party machine(before the Tea Party was officially formed) when she ran against and defeated a sitting Republican governor. She also backed Joe Miller against the sitting Rep Sen of Alaska, defeating her in the primary but losing to her in a close election.

Marco Rubio BTW a racist Hispanic, also won the Florida Senate seat by defeating the hand-picked Republican Charley Crist, who was being touted as possible Republican Presidential candidate just a brief two years ago. There were lots of other candidates, some white, some people of color, that were run by the Tea Party and defeated Republican Party-endorsed candidates in the primaries.

So no matter how much you may disagree with their positions, it is obvious that the Tea Party is neither racist nor a tool of the Republican party. Anyone that looked at the facts calmly and rationally would see that. But liberals/progressives are emotionally driven creatures. They lead with their hearts and leave their brains behind.

The Republican party now has a grand total of two African-Americans, seven Hispanics, one Jew and two Asian-Americans in elected office on the national level.

Both black candidates were elected in Republican-leaning districts.

The late Sen. Byrd a former KKK member, was a member of the Democratic Party. There’s outliers in every large group

But the modern day Republican party was built on racial resentment and religious fundamentalism. Deny that, and deny history.

Republicans haven’t gotten more than 30 percent of the African-American vote in presidential elections since the 1920’s. In recent times, they haven’t gotten more than 10 to 20 percent.

Jews, Hispanics and Asian-Americans vote overwhelmingly Democratic. Women and non-religious people vote Democratic for the most part.

The Republican Party thrives on racial resentment and religious fundamentalism. The Tea party is a more conservative wing of the Republican Party and only exacerbates that.

The study I pointed out found that Teabaggers were less likely to think of African-Americans as hard-working, trustworthy and intelligent.

Do you agree with those sentiments?

Where was the Tea Party at when the white president nearly doubled the national debt? Were they not there because he was white, and spending didn’t matter then? Because the spending was on rich white people? That it was to kill non-white people?

What was the difference, other than the color of the president’s skin? George Bush expanded government in a big way, and intruded into people’s lives more than any administration in history with the Patriot Act. Where was the Tea Party then?

Or better yet, take if from the mouth of the former Republican National Committee Chairman:

"By the '70s and into the '80s and '90s, the Democratic Party solidified its gains in the African American community, and we Republicans did not effectively reach out," Mehlman says in his prepared text. "Some Republicans gave up on winning the African American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization. I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong."

If you would like to see the president’s birth certificate, here’s what you do: save up you allowance, maybe run some errands for neighbors, cut some grass. For $100, you can get your very own copy from the state of Hawaii.

Some day, when you grow up, you might go off to college. There, you’ll learn about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. It’ll be great. Wow, anyone that can write that has fallen so far into the abyss that it will take people with professional training to pull you out. But I will try to help you maintain what sanity you have left until professional help comes along.

You spent a lot of time writing about how the blacks, Hispanics, Jews and other minorities tend to vote Dem in large numbers. I guess your logic is that if you won't vote for me....that means I'm a racist..... or something like that????

You still haven't explained how or why all those racist Tea Party people elected several people of color all across the south, most of whom were running against Republican-machine picked candidates. They had to get nearly unanimous Tea Party backing to defeat the Rep machine in the primaries.

BTW, Sen Byrd was more than a mere member of the KKK. He was the founder and Grand Kleagle of his chapter and unanimously elected as its Exalted Cyclops.

As for Bush43 and his spending....who wrote the No Child Left Behind Act?

Who wrote the 2001 Agricultural Bill?

Who wrote the Omnibus Transportation Bill in 2002?

Here's a hint.....Ted Kennedy....Tom Daschle....a pork barrel free for all.

Bush passed these bills because he had only 50 votes in the Senate and he needed Dem support to get anything passed, thus he allowed them to spend willy nilly to appease them. And lots of conservatives screamed about it....ain't my fault you don't listen to conservative radio so you are woefully uninformed on that issue.

I'd go on but I'm afraid that it would only stir such cognitive dissonance that you would fall further into that abyss.

Hang in there, buddy...help is on its way.

They elected two black Republicans nationally. The first since 2003. Two is hardly several. I’m sure the NAACP award is in the mail.

The Bush administration blew a whole in the budget with large tax cuts for the rich, spending on two wars and the Medicare Part D plan. Each of those Bush agenda items will cost over $1 trillion over the course of a decade. But by your logic, John Boehner is responsible for anything the president does for the next two years because he needs Republicans votes to do anything? Somehow, I think the president is still going to take the brunt of the blame.

Why don’t you answer the question: Do you think African-Americans are less trustworthy, hard-working and intelligent than their white counterparts like the majority of Tea Baggers do?

And favorite authors/headliners of Tea Party events are Thomas Sowell, Herman Cain, Deroy Murdock, Alan Keyes, and Armstrong Williams. And if Herman Cain doesn't win it won't be because of the lack of Tea Party support...more likely it would be because of the racist southern Dems.

As for the lack of achievement by the black community, it is because the progressive agenda that destroyed the back family and community. Prior to the Great Society programs, they had strong families, strong work ethics, strong religious ties. Most of that has been destroyed by the welfare system...as it was intended to do so. Get them addicted to government handouts and you have lifelong democratic voters keeping the Ds in power.

Are blacks less trustworthy, no I don't think that are any less trustworthy than any other race. However most prisons have a high percentage of blacks, so they must get caught more often than other races.

Hard working? Absolutely, they will work as hard as any other race. In fact I have worked in labor intensive jobs and all the people in those fields work hard, or quit.

Intelligent? They are no dumber or smarter than anyone with an equal opportunities.

Lastly we are not "teabaggers"
I consider that to be on the par with calling blacks the N word. If you want respect you have to give it.

Bozo - If I can count them on one hand and there over what?, 250 Republicans elected nationally at least, that is not several. Sorry it just isn’t. I listed the number of elected officials in the Republican party that aren’t white, and I don’t think anyone’s going to claim it’s the Big Tent Party anytime soon.

And I really don’t care if the Teabaggers can find a few black conservatives to trot out on stage as a token. There were actually Jews in the Nazi army, too. Does that mean the movement wasn’t in fact anti-semetic?

“As for the lack of achievement by the black community, it is because the progressive agenda that destroyed the back family and community. Prior to the Great Society programs”…. There was Jim Crow and segregation. So blacks had it better when they knew better than to sleep with white women, drink from a white water fountain, sit on the back of the bus and attend their own universities? That’s really what you’re arguing? I’m pretty sure every sensible African-American would vehemently disagree with you on that one, buddy.

TEA - I appreciate you answering my question. But please don’t compare a word that’s been used to demean a whole race of Americans for centuries to a term that is used to describe a group of people that who feel disenfranchised even though they’re not.

“Should we not put in affirmative action programs so other races can have a chance to also play sports?”

We already do to a degree. At my alma mater, we have the largest athletic program in the country - 36 sports, I think. Only two make money - football and basketball. Both are dominated by black kids, mostly from the inner-city. The money they make for the athletic department is then used to subsidize scholarships for 34 other sports, most of which are played by middle class white kids. Those kids at my alma mater playing tennis, golf, lacrosse, hockey, soccer, swimming and every other sport can thank those inner-city African-American kids for their scholarships.

“Why do blacks dominate sports?”

I can’t really answer that, but the question is certainly over-generalized. I’m pretty positive that if you looked at the race of every single professional athlete out there, blacks would still be in the minority. They dominate in basketball, football and track. Other than that, most of your sports are still lily white, with the exception of boxing and baseball, which are starting to be dominated Hispanics. I think it’s a combination of nature vs. nurture, but the issue is often overlooked in academia.

I did once see a study that separated athletes by where their parents parked. If they parked on the street, black or white, those kids tended to have more success on the field. If they parked in a garage, those kids were less likely to succeed. The point was, the garage kids are more likely to have more opportunities, better home lives and more money to branch out and try other things.

I also saw a study about boxing once that I found to be very interesting. Basically the researchers hypothesized that the most discriminated group that was allowed to participate dominated. Early, 20th Century it was Catholics, mainly Irish and Italians. In the middle of the Century it was African-Americans. Now it’s Hispanics.

Like I said, I can’t really answer your question. I think it’s a fascinating subject, though.

If you are one of them then that includes you also. If you work for a living, then you obviously don't want to give away any more money to the government than you are required to give. If you want to give more than there are plenty of government agencies that are more than willing to take your money. If you don't work and suck on the government tit then you probably don't give a shit what everyone else pays as long as it is not you.
Matt has addressed the problems of East Liverpool and knows that many of East Liverpools' problems are a direct result of the HUD housing, Slumlords and the general attitude that breeds in a area of poverty. IF everyone were required to drug test, look for employment and do community service for their "free" money, we would all win.

“Now you are the authority on who is disenfranchised and who is not.?”

No, but I do know how to use a dictionary.

Disenfranchised - revocation of the right of suffrage (the right to vote) of a person or group of people, or rendering a person's vote less effective, or ineffective. Disfranchisement may occur explicitly through law, or implicitly by intimidation or by placing unreasonable registration or identification impediments in the path of voters.

Did the New Black Panther Party or ACORN keep you from your polling place?

“If you work for a living, then you obviously don't want to give away any more money to the government than you are required to give.”

If you’re paying more than what the tax code requires of you, then that’s your fault. If you’re that pissed about taxes, you’re a few years to late, hombre.

“Actually, as a share of the nation's economy, Uncle Sam's take this year will be the lowest since 1950, when the Korean War was just getting under way.”

“And for the third straight year, American families and businesses will pay less in federal taxes than they did under former President George W. Bush, thanks to a weak economy and a growing number of tax breaks for the wealthy and poor alike.”

YUC,
It would be interesting to see the New Black Panther party or Acorn try to stop voters anywhere in this valley. They know who and when to control. And it ain't us. If they brought a club or a nightstick to a polling place someone would have made them a necktie out of it.

You better start looking for another job 'cause the goverment tit is drying up, and time to wean you.
