The just and unjust
by M. Stewart
It's safe to conclude that Republican County Commissioner Mike Halleck isn't going out of his way to help East Liverpool collect its debt from the Buckeye Water District out of a sense of justice.
No, Halleck's assistance comes as a result of a clear understanding that East Liverpool's claim against the county is real, and something needs to be done about it. After all, the interest meter keeps on ticking, and the longer BWD withholds payment, the worse it gets for everyone tethered to it.
Too early to call, you say? Yes it is, but it's starting to look good for the city, and regardless of the reason, we have Commissioner Halleck to thank for it. All's well that ends well, I guess. We mustn't forget that everything that's happened to the good folks at BWD they brought on themselves. Sometimes people get what they deserve.
It remains unclear how innocent BWD customers will fare after all this is over. It's not like they can go elsewhere for their water, and BWD water already is the most expensive in the county. By the time the gas frackers are done with Columbiana County, personal wells won't be the answer. Good luck folks. I guess living in the city has its advantages.
Speaking of injustice, the local newspapers have been filling us in on the coroner's report involving the case of East Liverpool resident Ulrich Estimot, who decided to commit suicide and murder his three children by setting fire to their house in March. Of course it's hard to imagine the desperation that would cause a father to do such a ghastly thing to his children, but the sad truth is that cases of parents killing their children are fairly common. And it's not just crazy fathers who do it; moms kill their kids too.
Beyond gasping at the horror and injustice, there isn't much one can say about such things. They happen, and that's that. The best we can do is try to avoid associating with people capable of committing such heinous acts of cowardice and desperation. At times like this, I wish there really was a god who provides justice and protects the children.
Oh well, perhaps we should be satisfied that it's another beautiful spring day here in the Upper Ohio Valley. The sun is shining and the temperatures are pleasant. I plan to have a good day. I hope the same is true for you.
