Response to BWD update
by M. Stewart
I see in Thursday's Review that the Buckeye Water District says it will not pay East Liverpool what it owes; instead, it has agreed to pay less--all the while letting interest accrue on its debt. Mayor Swoger, who is now speaking out on the matter, made a good point when he said that BWD would never allow its customers to short them on a water bill. They wouldn't. And shouldn't.
I hope the mayor and other elected officials continue to put public pressure on the water district and its apologists to settle the account. Secret negotiations are fine if they produce results, but public attention flushes the chumps into the open. Those associated with the water district have had every opportunity to stand up for honesty and integrity, yet they have chosen to hide behind those closed doors, hoping (I assume) that northern county Republicans would be successful in convincing the public that East Liverpool is the villain.
If BWD and county officials would have been honest from the beginning, they wouldn't be in such a mess. Meanwhile, state Rep. Newbold--owner of nearly all of East Liverpool's empty buildings--is hard at work in Columbus trying to get his friends off the hook.

BWD's announcement, a direct slap in the face of a court order, is simply baffling to me. How can this be? If they get away with this, it should become case law for anyone trying to get out of a court-ordered debt repayment. Perhaps I should contact a lawyer and see if I can get out of paying child support --- or at the very least, have it decreased.
By the way, Obama just lost the election. That should be your next post, Matt.
Jeff--If Obama loses the election because he refuses to discriminate against Americans, then America deserves what it gets.
As for BWD, give Newbold and the Republicans more time to work. They'll end up getting the water district off the hook. Remember, Ohio is now part of the Tea Party Confederacy.
You are forgetting who actually has to pay this money back.....the innocent customers of BWD. We had NO choice in the decisions made by their board and we had NO choice who sits on their board. Heck for that matter we had NO choice in BWD providing water to us.
Well, I hope I didn't sound like I'm against gay marriage, only that Biden really screwed Obama by getting him mixed up in one of the most volatile issues of the day this close to the Lying Season. I mean, what did Obama really gain? Okay, so he got the gay vote, but he lost the majority votes within the Hispanic and black community, two groups that were the 3-point jump shot with five seconds left on the buzzer back in 2008. Even moderate Democrats, of which I know many, will be turned off. Just saying, you know. And you're right about America getting what it deserves. What's that old saying about voting? You get what you vote for? Yes.
They should hold them in contempt of court!
The judge may have been right in awarding the money, but should have mandated that the Buckeye Water district be dissolved, that new ELECTED people be installed, and then be re-elected or replaced, by the voters, just as we do with other boards. Once again the only people that will pay is the customers of the water district.
As far as Osama Obama goes, he is already packing his bags. He just had his gay announcement so he could cash in on the Clooneys. The people in Hollywood do not deal in reality, and the prez is just fine with that.
The BWD board is already on record saying rates will NOT increase as a result of this lawsuit. just sayin'
And by the way: those waiting for ELO to get this chunk of change to "do roads" are waiting for nothing.
The money has to be placed in the water department fund and cannot be used for anything other than water uses.
Just FYI
